How to Avoid Verbal Vomit by Sticking to These Resume Tips

The most important section on your resume is your experience section. This section shows employers what you have done in your past roles and what is transferable into the new role you are applying and interviewing for. When creating your experience section, you want to be sure you use bullet points to highlight what you did in your previous roles and to be concise in your explanations.

However, the experience section is not the only relevant section on your resume. You should also list an education section and a skills section. Use the skills section to portray your top skills that would make you the best candidate for the position you are pursuing. Many people can "over-do" their skills section and add too many skills that may not be applicable to the job.

This week we learn more about how to keep your skills section concise and avoid verbal vomit on your resume completely. ?

Creating Your Skills Section

When creating the skills section, it is important to refrain from “verbal vomit.”? Creating a long list of personality traits can come off in-genuine and adds nothing of value to the hiring manager. Instead use 4-6 of your top skills which match the job you are applying for and use those. It is important to think of technical skills, certificates and even language skills that you possess which would make you stand out as a candidate. Look over the job description and compare the skills the employer is looking for to the skills you have.?

From there, start to create your list. If the employer is looking for a candidate with Microsoft Office skills and you are strong in those programs, then you would list MS Office as a skillset.?Another example would be, if the employer is looking for a candidate who is bilingual in English and Spanish and you are, then you would list your language skills here. It is important to revamp your skills section just as you would your experience section for each job you are applying to. Make sure you take the time to compare your resume to each job description you are interested in and tailor accordingly.?

Placement of Skills ??

Placement of the skills section on your resume can vary. Some candidates choose to list their skills at the top of their resume and others choose to place it at the bottom. The placement doesn’t make a difference as long as you keep it near your education section. The two go hand in hand so keeping them above or below one another will allow your resume to have a logical flow to the reader.?

You are unique and the skills you bring to your next employer will make you an asset to the organization. Keep this in mind when you are in your job search.? You know what value you have to offer and the first impression the hiring manager will have is the resume you submit. Take the time needed up front to create a resume that correlates your skills with the job you are applying for.?

Keep your skills section to a maximum of 4 to 6 of your top skills that match the job description and create a logical flow to the organization of your resume. This will be sure to create a resume that a potential employer can easily follow.??

Conclusion

There's many ways people can highlight and stand out from above the rest, but by taking the tips from the above, your resume will appear professional and well-rounded to a hiring manager, or recruiting professional.
