How to avoid turf wars and get on with strategy

Nothing gets in the way of thinking strategically about the future more than turf wars.

Team members dig in and see everything through the lens of ‘how will this affect me and my area?’

Leaders can tear their hair out and gnaw on their fists in frustration hoping their team members will ‘get over it’ and start thinking of the big picture.?

It’s not that easy.

Here are some ways to avoid turf wars and develop the strategic team you long for:

Lay the foundations: it’s back to the people stuff.?

  • Create same page trust. When everyone is clear on purpose and results, this creates a clear direction for all.
  • Do the groundwork by asking each team member to share their expertise and background. This builds fast trust.?
  • Draw a map of how the organisation’s operational areas intersect and connect. This system map of the business will highlight dependencies and conflicts and allow for troubleshooting.
  • Create better KPIs. Once we have a system map done, we can identify the results, and the measures, we need to track for critical outcomes in the system of the business. When we do this together as a team, we get a sense of how each operating area contributes to the others and the whole. It cements the message ‘we are all in this together’ and ‘we need each other’.
