How to Avoid a Toxic Employer in the Cyber Security Industry

The cyber security industry offers a fast-paced, rewarding and dynamic work environment, but not all companies are created equal. Working for a toxic employer can make even the most thrilling role a living nightmare for you and those dear to you.

So, what can make an employer toxic? How do you identify one and how can you steer clear of one?

Communication: Effective communication is a crucial component of any healthy workplace, especially for those working remotely. Examples could range from a lack of feedback on performance to knowing what is expected of you and the company goals / objectives etc.

Overbearing Management: A boss or team lead or department head who constantly micromanages your work, controls every move, and criticises your decisions. Look out for signs of micromanagement such as regular email check-ins, constant updates and a lack of trust in your abilities.

Poisonous Culture: Negative attitudes, gossiping, exclusion, bullying or harassment of any kind is a red flag.

Unsustainable Work-Life Balance: An employer that demands long hours, sacrifices personal life, and prioritises work over family and friends.

No Room for Growth: Companies that neglect to invest in employee growth and development can result in employees feeling undervalued and disillusioned.?

Political Atmosphere: Companies with “office politics”, back-stabbing and power struggles are never a nice be around.?

Tick box security: Nothing says we take security more seriously then going through the motions to appease an audit or external review. AVOID

So, how can you identify or avoid joining a toxic employer?

Do Your Research: Before accepting a job offer, thoroughly research the company, its people and its culture. Start with checking out their reviews, mission statement and employee feedback.

Glassdoor, google reviews, reddit for example can give you a valuable insight.

Ask the Right Questions: During the interview process ask the right questions. For example;

o How long as this position been open for??

o Why did the last person leave??

o Why has this role been advertised several times over the past few years?

Leverage Your Network: If you have mutual connections that have experience with the company, ask for their opinion and experience.

Trust Your Instincts: If you are unsure about something and you can't verify it trust your gut and walk away if you aren't able or open to take the risk.

Be honest with yourself: If you see any of the above within your own company? If you are unhappy and are unsure how to make change reach out to me for a confidential conversation.

Working for a toxic employer can be a draining and demotivating experience, but there is always another option available.

As a first step, if you work in the cyber security industry, are based in the UK / EMEA region let's chat.

I consider myself to be lucky I have been at the forefront of cyber security for the past 20 years and have to say each and every employer I have worked for have allowed me to be flexible, put my family first and each and every opportunity has been fantastic. It’s ashame to see that this exists within the cyber community.
