The Too Nice Trap - A Familiar Dilemma

You know it well; wanting to be supportive and kind to your team, but sometimes, being too nice can backfire. As a leadership coach, it's essential to recognise when our caring nature might blur the lines and impact our authority and effectiveness.

Why You Need To Avoid The Trap

  • Be an Authentic Leader: Authenticity is key in leadership coaching. Finding the right balance between kindness and firmness will help you stay true to yourself and inspire others.
  • Foster Strong Teams: Avoiding the trap allows you to cultivate a team that respects your guidance and grows stronger together.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup! Setting boundaries and asserting your leadership helps you focus on your growth and well-being.

Strategies To Master the Balancing Act

  1. Communication is Key: Clearly communicate your vision and expectations. When everyone's on the same page, it's easier to maintain the right balance.
  2. Empathy Rules, But...: Empathy is your superpower, but don't forget to set emotional boundaries. Show understanding without getting lost in others' emotions.
  3. Own Your Authority: You're the captain of the ship. Embrace your authority while still being approachable.
  4. Celebrate Wins & Growth: Acknowledge achievements and growth. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in building trust and support.
  5. Say "No" When Needed: Don't be afraid to say "no" when it's necessary. Setting limits isn't selfish; it's about maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
  6. Lead by Example: Your actions speak louder than words. Model the behavior you expect from your team.

Taking care of myself, I was very slow at learning, and paid the price a few times. These days its my highest priority. If I can't look after myself, then I shouldn't be telling others how to do it. This also embodies the authentic leader principle. Thanks for the reminder ??
