There are many types of malware (the umbrella term for anything and everything that maliciously targets your computer, mobile device, your account, or the data that resides within.) Ransomware is the most recent, and nastiest, of the bunch.
What makes ransomware so vicious is that it will encrypt all of the data on your device–and in many cases your servers, all computers on your network, and your online backups. When attempting to open a file, a window appears saying something to the effect of: All your data is ours. We have encrypted your data. If you pay $400 in bitcoin to address ______________ within 72 hours, we will send you the decryption key. Act quickly, as the decryption key is valid for only the next 72 hours. After this time, even we cannot rescue your data.
