How to avoid "a forced" Oracle ULA renewal

In the past year Oracle have made a major change to their audit organization. They are shifting focus from traditional audits to instead "helping" companies renew their Oracle ULA.
One of the most common reasons why companies ask me for help, is that they have understood that exiting an Oracle ULA is not as easy as Oracle tells them it is.
The big "gotcha" is that Oracle will make an audit at the end of the Oracle ULA, deploy their audit scripts and compare your usage towards your contracts.
A big part of my job is to help Oracle customers exit their Oracle ULA. Sometimes my clients don't have any preference about exiting or renewing, other times they want me to advise them on making the best decision.
I like the latter part because, before you have reviewed your contracts, your licensing deployments you don't know if you can actually exit.
If I would make an educated guess, over 50% of all companies who sign an Oracle Unlimited License Agreement, end up renewing because of non-compliance found by Oracle during the "certification/exit" process.
Why do companies end up renewing their Oracle ULA even if they want to exit?
If you are able to manage these four challenges you have a very good chance of success.
Challenge 1#
Comment: You need to be able to analyse Oracle Audit scripts, this is the most important activity. If you trust a software asset management tool, you are heading for disaster.
You also need experienced advise to help you navigate the many grey areas around Oracle licensing and your specific contract.
Challenge #2
Comment: If you signed a Oracle ULA with the wrong contract terms, you are in trouble.
Challenge #3
Comment: Very common, many companies don't pay attention to this. But i will bet you, that Oracle does. As soon as you tell them that you want to exit.
Challenge #4
Comment: Do you have an Oracle ULA? And have deployed in Cloud? As soon as the Oracle ULA ends you are non-compliant.
So what can you do about it?
Here are some options that Oracle might not share with you.
Use it to build your own Oracle ULA renewal or exit strategy and save money for your company.

4 年Hi Fredrik. I have question about the Oracle licensing. I need to understand the licensing implications in moving from IAX to Linux, Does Linux require more processing power? Also if the migration will have an impact on the oracle ULA I hope I succeeds to make my questions clear for you. Thanks

Oracle has a process filled with "good" arguments to why you should renew. If you are not well prepared, you will be forced to renew your ULA?
