How to Avoid the Dreaded "Um"? in Your Speaking

How to Avoid the Dreaded "Um" in Your Speaking

You want to be seen as credible and trustworthy but if you do too many filler words such as um, you lose your listeners attention and/or are seen as unsure of yourself.

In this video, you will learn:

??Why the usual methods of eliminating "ums" are ineffective, especially in today's world where people are craving real human connection.

?? The key to drastically reducing those filler words and speaking from your power.

The old method is to count the number of "ums" you are saying. But the problems with that are:

?? It doesn't eliminate your ums, it only gives you awareness.

?? If you are so busy counting in your head, your attention is on YOU. How are you able to connect with your audience, deeply listen and form a real connection?

People want to feel seen and heard... and they won't feel that way if you are in head and not your heart.

The biggest reason why people have the 'um' problem is:

?? They are not clear on what their talking points and/or they don't have them rehearsed to the point that it is like walking - they know it inside out without thinking about it.

The best way to see those ums and other filler words float away is to:

  1. Map out your talking points.
  2. Talk them through a few times while walking around. Let it be a free flow. It's great way to help you clarify your thoughts and solidify your content flow.
  3. Rehearse but don't be memorized (because you will be too much in your head).

It's about embodying the truths you want to share.

And when you are embodied, THAT is where speaking from your power comes in.

It's more than just being confident. It's about those nuances that make you highly magnetic and able to influence on a far greater level.

I learned from Toastmasters about um, right, and you know what I mean. I have a good friend that says all 3 in every conversation and it’s like a dentist drilling on your teeth. I mentioned it to her once and she said, “I know what you mean, I’m gonna try to work on that,” yet she still does it. I feel our conversations to be boring now. How would you approach this so that you don’t just eliminate the friendship?

I also catch myself saying 'right' way too much. I have worked on this and it is better but a funny filler word. You really helped me to learn to breathe and enjoy the pause in my speaking and I get comments all the time about the power that comes through from my speaking.

Now I'm torn between wanting to go and look at my last few videos and counting the "ums" and putting my head (ostrich style) and not thinking about it. I am the sort of person that tends to go into presentations with a solid outline but not an exact script -- because the moment I have a script I start to read it and then I sound like "not me."

Great seeing you again Cindy. I learned about the filler words being at Toast Master. However I discover when I was a leader with WESOS, speaking from the heart was much more influential and recieved authentically. It was great meeting you in Barrington pre pandemic. I need to get back into speaking becuase practice develops excellence.

You are right that even a little preparation can help reduce the filler words. I also find it helpful to choose specific keywords or phrases that I want to use in my talk as I find that it's when we have to search for these descriptive words that slows us down. To clarify, I don't mean typical speaker notes/flow, I mean actual words/terminology.
