HOW TO AVOID THE DOWNTIMES DUE TO STEEL BAND BREAKING OR SLIPPING OFF

Have you ever had a headache from a steel band suddenly breaking, overlapping or sliding off from the mandrel?

The causes of such situations may be difficult to determine and could be frustrating when you need to reach a delivery deadline.

Last year we helped several CFW GRP Plants like yours to reduce the downtimes and increase the production's long runs even if they were producing small diameters. They started to use our unique Performance Coils, the new EFW?? steel band designed for the CFW production, and after one year, they confirmed that our PERFORMANCE COILS last up to 40% longer and reduce the downtimes.

You know very well that your plant downtime is the period during which the plant is off-line and not delivering any products or not adding value to the business and your customers. It can also be called idle time, downtime, or off-line period.?Certainly, an excessive amount of downtime can indicate unreliable equipment and cause extensive losses.

It is very important to understand how to check the possible deviations in the shape characteristics of the steel band, because they may look very similar, but their behaviour on your CFW machine can be very different.

It might be hard to believe, but the steel band's characteristics such as chemical composition, edge finish, and the irregular surface flatness may be some of the causes of your production headaches.

The important characteristics for steel strip products are typically:

  • Chemical composition;
  • Flatness;
  • Straightness;
  • Thickness, width & edges.?

?I have prepared a summary for you of the consequences for CFW pipe production related to steel band parameter deviations:

Once you have checked the important characteristics, it is time for you to analyse the welding procedure:

During my audits in the CFW Plants, I have witnessed that the steel strip welding is one of the weakest links of the chain inherent with the mandrel preparation.

The impact on profit due to the steel band breakage in the welding area could be very high, particularly due to the:

  • increase in scrap generation, especially due to the stoppage and re-start of production (the larger the diameter, the higher the volume of scrap);
  • reduction of the plant efficiency, due to the stoppage and re-start, until the required production speed is reached;
  • problems with production, caused by the incorrect alignment of the steel band during the welding of the joint.?

If you are encountering problems during the welding, I agree with you that the real causes may be difficult to determine. I mention in this article only some of the possible causes:

  • Steel Band preparation
  • Inadequate wiring and fusing or insufficient power of the welding machine.
  • Pitted or dirty jaws
  • Uneven clamping pressure
  • Problems in the annealing

If you are experiencing any problems related to your steel band, I will be happy to try and solve them for you.
