How Authors Can Leverage Their Books to Land the Best Speaking Gigs

There are many stages out there, but there are even more speakers. Here are two key reasons why authors have the edge:

  1. Credibility: People inherently respect authors. A published book acts as a tangible testament to your expertise and knowledge. Unlike social media followings or blog readership, a book carries a certain weight.
  2. Confidence: The process of writing and publishing a book equips you with a deep understanding of your topic. This mastery translates into confidence when presenting on stage. Your book serves as your "manifesto," a comprehensive articulation of your message, values, and mission.

GIGS: A Guide to Landing Speaking Engagements

As you can see above, an author has the edge over non-author speakers. However, there are a few things you can do to make you a 'must book' speaker.

  • Generate Publicity: Don't underestimate your ability to contribute to event promotion. Leverage your existing audience (email list, social media followers) to spread the word about the event. Offer to reach out to local press or engage in other publicity efforts. This demonstrates initiative and commitment to the event's success.
  • Impact the Objective: As discussed earlier, understanding the event organizer's objectives is crucial. Once you know their goals, you can tailor your presentation to directly contribute to their desired outcomes. This collaborative approach makes you a valuable asset.
  • Gifts: This doesn't necessarily mean physical gifts. It signifies offering something of value to the organizer and attendees. This could be a free consultation, a downloadable resource booklet based on your talk, or a discount on your book.

By leveraging the power of their books, developing compelling presentations, and understanding event organizer needs, authors can successfully transition into the lucrative world of keynote speaking.

I love this as most posts actively discourage 'gifts', such as 'don't undervalue yourself', 'nrver discount', never give 'free' advice', and always charge what you're worth'. We agree with your point on gifts. We've spent the last forty years writing books, both business and fiction. We use the books to gain speaking engagements and clients. We always start with some free events and 'gifts' to influential people; many are clients and colleagues in our network of friendly contacts. As you say, they don't have to be physical gifts. Doing this will also help you generate positive launch publicity from mainstream media and great reviews and recommendations which makes promotion so much easier. Excellent post - thank you, Mitali. ??
