Developing a React JavaScript FHIR Editor UI with ChatGPT as Your Coding Assistant

Introduction

In the constantly evolving world of software development, staying updated with the latest tools and technologies is crucial. Today, I'd like to walk you through our unique journey of creating a React-based FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) editor UI. It's still a work in prgress, but you can see it here https://github.com/fhirfly/fhir-editor and we will be accepting contributions as soon as it is in MVP status (end of next week). What made our journey special? The invaluable assistance of ChatGPT, OpenAI's advanced language model.

Understanding FHIR

For those new to the concept, FHIR is a groundbreaking standard for health care data exchange. It is designed to facilitate the representation and interoperability of both clinical and administrative data. Creating an intuitive editor for such a sophisticated data structure can seem intimidating, but with a blend of determination and the right tools, it transforms into an exhilarating challenge.

The Magic of ChatGPT

If you haven't met ChatGPT yet, let me introduce you to this technological marvel. Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT has revolutionized various domains, including — you guessed it — software development.

Why is ChatGPT a Developer's Best Friend?

  • Real-time Feedback: No more waiting; get coding suggestions instantly.
  • Prompt Engineering: Craft your questions for optimized coding solutions.
  • Rapid Learning: Grasp new libraries or concepts in a flash.

A Glimpse into Our Development Odyssey

  1. Foundation — React Setup: Our first step was to establish a rudimentary React application. With ChatGPT at our side, seamlessly integrating essential libraries and tools became second nature. Dive deeper into how ChatGPT aided our FHIR library integration: [Link to ChatGPT Example]
  2. UI Crafting: Having acquainted ourselves with FHIR's intricacies, we envisioned a user interface that strikes a balance between intuition and efficiency. During hurdles, ChatGPT was our reservoir for UI design patterns and best practices. [Link to ChatGPT Example]
  3. Embedding FHIR Logic: This stage was a testament to ChatGPT's prowess. What seemed like intricate data structures and intercommunication rules were made comprehensible with the model's elucidations. Experience ChatGPT in action with FHIR logic.
  4. The Crucible — Testing & Debugging: Inevitable bugs and challenges were promptly resolved, all thanks to ChatGPT. Be it demystifying error messages or refining our code, ChatGPT was our guiding light. [Link to ChatGPT Debugging Prompt]

Concluding Thoughts

The odyssey of creating a React JavaScript FHIR editor UI was more than just a coding endeavor. It was a testament to the boundless potential of blending human innovation with artificial intelligence. ChatGPT didn't just assist; it transformed the way we approached problems.

Have you dabbled with ChatGPT or similar models in your coding escapades? I'd love to hear about your experiences. Share them in the comments below!

I'm not a developer, but with the help of Udemy, a few YouTube videos, and a whole LOT of ChapGPT I was able to put together a POC FHIR Viewer, built using Material UI (React) and Python (Flask), in a matter of a few days. It's bonkers to think about the rapid development that can be done with the proper knowledge set and tools. Excited to hear other's stories!
