Running a food business already comes with many challenges. However, one of the biggest struggles that I notice restauranteurs face every single time when opening or rebranding their establishment is HIRING HEAD CHEFS.
Understandably, many factors are at play when choosing the right person but with the current situation in the hospitality industry, great chefs are snatched within moments so as an establishment you have to think of what will make them CHOOSE YOU.
Here are a few tips on how to attract talent to your food business:
1. Don't cut corners with payments. This is sadly something that happens more often than I wish I would like to see but make sure your accounting is in place before offering a great salary.
2. Clear communication. Make sure you are clear about the goals and what you expect from your chef. Whether you want them to experiment with the menu and invent new dishes or stick to the plan -it is very important to know how much freedom they will have in the kitchen.
3. Hiring power - will the chef have input in building the team? This is sometimes overlooked but your chef will know people in the industry and what dynamics work and don't. Be clear about this from the beginning.
