In the last post, I talked about the importance of yourself as a marketing tool – actually, the best tool there is. You’re now aware of all of the benefits that come from speaking to your customers.
That brings me to a distinction that I’d like to make here. And I’m packaging it in with several tips about speaking in front of your customers that I’m going to bring up in this post.
To begin with, remember that you’re not presenting to your audience in a classroom. It means they’re not supposed to be students who sit in hushed silence listening to you, the lecturer.
Quite the contrary, you’ve got to engage people.
The first thing that you must do is pay attention to your body language. When your prospect is talking, you’d want to lean in and signal that you’re listening. You may also want to nod or raise your eyebrows when you hear something interesting.
These subtle cues have a bigger effect than you might think. The person feels your acknowledgment and receives a boost to their ego. The result is an instant attraction to you. You’re far ahead in winning the prospect over if you’re able to show that you understand.
Another method is to repeat what the prospect has just said. For instance:
“Okay, so you want to buy A and B so that you can do X, Y, and Z?”
This is a direct confirmation that you understand the prospect’s needs and problems. On a subconscious level, it also sends the message that you know how to solve them.
Finally, you’re going to want to ask questions when you’re talking, no matter if you’re talking to one person or a group. But that doesn’t mean that you should just go through the motion.
Instead, you have to bring a lot of energy to those questions. You can’t go wrong with encouraging people to talk about themselves because it’s everyone’s favorite topic.
It’s also a chance for you to show that you’re a good listener. After that, you can repeat all of the above.
That’s the distinction between engaging people and simply talking to them. The former is the key to attracting people to what your business has to offer.
