How to Attract More Fans and Engagement To Your Facebook and Twitter Pages

If you’re thinking about using Social Media for your business or you’re at the stage where you have a Social Media presence but need to increase engagement, then the below should be of some use to you.

As of 2014, there were 2.9 billion Internet users worldwide (statista.com). By the end of Q3 2014, Facebook had 1.35 billion monthly active users with Twitter having 284 million during the same period.

The point is that Social Media is a significant part of the Internet. A 2013 report showed that almost 1 in 4 people worldwide use Social Networks (emarketer.com). So really they can’t be ignored. In fact it’s vital that they are used when considering your businesses marketing activities.

Trying to build a following on the likes of Facebook and Twitter is not a simple task. In fact it takes planning, good ideas, a little courage and a lot of time. But when you get it right, it really is worth all the effort.

A few simple tips to get more followers on Twitter:

  • Go out and follow others. Don’t wait for people to follow you. If you are a small player or an unknown brand then you must take the lead. You can be relatively selective in who you follow. Try to follow people that are relevant to your business. People who may turn out to be good influencers. Engage with them and try to get them to follow back.

  • Look at some of the lists that the people you follow are on. Identify others within these lists to follow and engage with.

  • Don’t try to simply get a high number of followers. Aim to get people following you who will become engaged with you. Answer their questions and retweet them.

  • Create or Curate content that is relevant to your business and that your followers are interested in.

  • Tweet an appropriate number of times per day and be consistent. Some say that 10 to 14 tweets per day is optimal, but factors such as time of day and relevant content are also important. It will be a case of measuring and repeating until you get the balance right.

Having a high number of likes on your Facebook Business page does not necessarily equate to success. Most of the posts you make on Facebook may only be seen by a small percentage of your followers. With that in mind here are a few ways to try to ensure high Facebook engagement:

  • First things first is to make sure all the relevant parts of your page are completed with searchable information. You must fill out the ‘About’ section properly as it is highly relevant for SEO and for Google ranking. This section should include a brief overview of what you are offering, a detailed description of your business as well as a link to your website.

  • This might seem obvious but invite your own personal Facebook friends to like the page.

  • Ask Questions. Asking your Facebook fans some interesting questions will usually generate comments. And when they comment, some of their Facebook friends, who may not be fans of your page may see that comment and subsequently become aware of your page.

  • Offer a prize. Competitions are a great way to boost engagement and increase likes. Be aware however of the strict Facebook rules in relation to competitions. In many instances it might be worthwhile using a paid-for app to run the competition.

  • Use engaging images. I personally find that funny images have the highest engagement and are seen by many more non fans than fans.

  • Engage with the people who comment and like your posts. Be visable.

  • Make sure to promote your Social Media channels into your offline as well as online marketing activities. For example using posters on your shop-front window or prominently displayed above the fold on your website.

  • Identify your buyer personas and publish the type of content that appeals to them.
