Attracting clients as a consultant can seem daunting, but with the right strategies—such as effective communication and genuine expertise—it is achievable. Drawing from my own experiences, here are six key strategies to help you build a successful consulting practice:
1. Build Credibility
Credibility is the foundation of trust and the cornerstone of a successful consulting practice. When the top leadership of Apollo invited me to Bangalore as I was finishing my fellowship training and did not want to stay in the US, I faced the challenge of establishing myself in a new city. I knew I needed to build my reputation. By tackling complex cases that others avoided and showcasing my work through media, I increased my credibility among peers and referral doctors. They began sending me challenging and hard-to-diagnose patients, significantly boosting my credibility.
2. Harness the Power of Networking
Networking is crucial for expanding your reach and influence. I connected with peers by attending conferences, joining professional groups, and engaging in meaningful conversations. I even visited referral doctors, conducted training programs, and showcased my work. Despite initial negative profiling, these initiatives enhanced my reputation and increased my referral base.
3. Utilize Social Proof
People trust the experiences of others. By profiling my results, skills, and complex surgeries with minimal complication rates through direct and media channels, I built trust and reassured potential patients of my capabilities. Social proof became a powerful tool to demonstrate my reliability.
4. Establish Personal Branding
A strong personal brand sets you apart in a competitive market. I was among the first to create my own website and blog, regularly communicating with patients and sharing articles about their conditions and the expected outcomes of surgeries. This approach attracted international patients and strengthened reverse medical tourism. My work, including undertaking complex surgeries in Iraq, established me as a trusted authority in my field. Consistent and authentic communication reinforced my expertise and reliability.

5. Offer Value
Providing value is essential to attract and retain patients. I shared my knowledge through newsletters, training programs, CMEs, webinars, and tele-consultations with referral doctors. My motto was: refer only those you cannot handle, and if needed, I will guide you. By offering valuable insights and solutions, I demonstrated my expertise and commitment to helping others succeed, positioning myself as a go-to resource in my field. I also helped institutions and individuals start new programs, offering hands-on guidance and ensuring they received appropriate surgical exposure.
6. Maintain Consistency and Reliability
Consistency and reliability are key to building a strong reputation and fostering long-term relationships. In the surgical field, nurses are the main people who can assess one's skill and reliability. The day a surgeon starts operating on the close family of nurses, credibility is solidified. Deliver what you are capable of and avoid over-promising.
My journey in the medical field has shown me that building credibility, leveraging networking, showcasing social proof, strengthening personal branding, offering value, and staying engaged are all crucial elements to success.
