How attitude can drive you towards tackling problems and driving results

There will be times in our life when we feel we have not got what we deserved - the intensity of this thought can vary hugely from person to person and instance to instance. Difficult times can take us down and push us to be there, down there, for a significant amount of time. However, if we have the right attitude towards the downfall inculcated in us, we can deal with this, very efficiently.

This is true for each of us, without any exceptions. I see people who go through "tough times" for years at a stretch. While others who are extremely happy for years at a stretch. This doesn't necessarily mean that the guy who is having a tough time never had a good moment for years, and vice versa. Its how the person dealt with it.

We need to be conscious of the fact that our attitude cannot be vastly different in our professional and personal life. If I am ruthless and crazy about perfection and quality at work, I cannot live in a home that is far away from perfection. I will work towards optimization at home - let it be schedules or calendars or having the key holder at the right spot. Small or big - these things matter and make us what we are as people.

Over a period of time your professional life does impact the way you behave in personal life. You may not be able to befriend someone who has "I don't care" attitude; at least I can't. And the way you deal with issues in your personal life also changes. If you have done the right things professionally - I have a reason to believe that your decision making in personal life will also change for good.

But the power lies in the opposite. People who have been very good at dealing with their personal life since childhood, will do very well professionally.

Hence, the earlier our kids mature and start dealing with problems rationally, they will end up becoming better professionals later on.

I have seen this trend in quite a number of interviews that I take - and I take a lot of those. Candidates who are very confident and are able to do very well during case studies are the ones who are also more mature and seem to drive that maturity from their upbringing.

Best way to deal with a downfall is to learn from it, deal with it, move on and ensure it doesn't happen again.

So to summarize, there will be tough times and good times. Best is to develop the right attitude towards dealing with it. And even if we have not been able to deal with issues in the best way, there is always a window of opportunity to develop those skills while at work.
