How to attend your first Twitter chat, and get the most out of it.

What is a Twitter chat or Tweet up?

A Twitter chat is basically, when people gather together on Twitter, at a specific time, that has been pre-arranged. and they tweet about a topic together.

For example: I'm a guest on the wonderful Madalyn Sklar 's Twitter chat called #TwittterSmarter which happens everything Thursday at 6pm Uk, 1pm ET, 10am PT.

Madalyn has guests on each week to chat about a wide variety of topics, ranging from how to become better on social media, to today's which is about the role of empathy in social media, where I am the guest!

Why attend a Twiter chat?

Quite simply to socialise with others and to nurture relationships with them, is the biggest reason.

I have met lovely people by attending Twitter chat, over the years like the lovely Mel Bridger, who became my friend and then during lockdown my Personal Trainer. Or Nicole Osbourne who I met actually on Madalyn's chat who I have become great friends with too.

It is that is a wonderful way to learn really up-to-date information from others, in a fun and interesting way.

So whilst there might be a guest, on the chat sharing their expertise, the joy of it is to also learn from the community, ie those who attend the Twitter chat and the host too.

This interaction,is where the magic lies!

How to attend a Twitter chat?

Well, so let's say you decide to attend Madalyn's Twitter Smarter this evening at 6pm. The first thing, you need to do is go and find and follow Madalyn on Twitter.

Her handle, is Madalyn Sklar on Twitter - https://twitter.com/MadalynSklar?s=20&t=O6VNxGizliLNzjOMghsZvw

Then, at 6pm when it starts, you just go onto Twitter, on your phone in the App, or on your ipad, desktop or laptop, Find her account @MadalynSklar

And you will see that she starts Tweeting from her account bang on 6pm!

THE STRUCTURE OF THE TWITTER CHAT :

6-7pm (GMT) - Twitter Smarter Example.

6pm She will welcome everyone, and ask an ice-breaker question, and introduce her wonderful team who ensure that everyone who shows up feels seen, heard and understood; they are delight and make a world of difference to the Twitter chat experience.

And then, she will introduce her guest, like me today: ) 6.10pm

And then go for the questions, 6.20pm which will come out of her account, and where the people attending, answer underneath her account the questions.

Questions for today are: -( to give you a real-life example :)

Q1. Why is empathy important on social media? #TwittterSmarter

Q2 What does empathy look like on social media?#TwittterSmarter

Q3 Is empathy only important for customer service reps? #TwittterSmarter

Q4 Is showing empathy a weakness? #TwittterSmarter

Q5 How can emapthy help you connect with your audience effectively? #TwittterSmarter

Q6 Why is being empathetic overlooked on social media? #TwittterSmarter

Q7 How does empathy influence people's behaviour on social media? #TwittterSmarter

Q8. Should you be empathetic towards online trolls and spammers? #TwittterSmarter

Then wrap up the questions around 6.50pm and many people including the host will be tweeting until a little bit after 7pm and that's it!!

Remember to chat with others

You do this by just tweeting with them, through the Tweets from the host, or just do it directly on their profile!

Or you can just go into the Twitter Search bar or the Twitter 'google bar,' that I call it, and put in Twitter Smarter and click on latest, and then you will see up to the second Tweets from the chat!

BUT YOU MUST REMEMBER THE TWITTER CHAT NUMBER ONE RULE?!!
" You need to remember hashtag!" says Madalyn Sklar.- as otherwise people in the chat won't see you, not the host, not the guest and not the community!!

And...

its so important to just be a decent human to others not a sales machine

The idea is all about socialising with others and nurturing relationships with them, getting to know them, before you launch into any kind of selling on socail, which does happen and is often effective but once the relationship has been established ok?

Final recommendations..

And finally. I recommend pick one or two of them and return to them reguarly so that you get to know the host, and their community which will help you to start to get recognised on Titter and nurture those all impotant relationships. And of course you could be a guest like me today, or even start you own Twitter chat which is such a great way of growing your audience and business, as Madalyn will attest too.

And that's it!

I would love to hear your feedback and maybe see you on Twitter later on in the near future!

Love Carrie x ps any questions just ask me, no question too blonde!
