How Artistic Literacy can inspire young minds

In a world obsessed with finance and politics, artistic expression and its appreciation holds a uniquely important place.?

Young people increasingly need to showcase their emotions through the power of words, colours, poetry, comedy and more. We are in a day and age where art is no longer a side subject- it is taking center stage and becoming a humongous source of income too, unlike earlier.?

As your child grows in such a world, artistic literacy becomes imperative.?

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. From infancy, they look, touch, grasp, create and respond through movement and sound. They start to express themselves using different mediums of pencils, crayons, clay and even mud.?

Curiosity and creativity work together as children begin to imagine new ideas and solve problems by exploring their surroundings. Nurturing the imagination supports investigation, construction and reflection of ideation and self-expression.

Artistic literacy enables unique ways of looking at the world and expressing the multitude of deeply individualistic matters such as faith, humanity, and the universe.

While we are able to study, talk, read and write about the arts, “doing art” is a process using more than visible traditional knowledge and skill application to create meaning. Artistic literacy promotes design-thinking, creativity and critical thinking, essential skills for the future workforce.?

When children are immersed in artistic literacy, they begin to balance complex relationships in perspective, nature, symbols and explanation. They begin to see patterns and lines in their everyday environment and look at how colouring inside and outside the lines of a template can relate to different expressions of emotion.

Teaching children to think like an artist can be challenging. They can also make connections through an artistic lens in math and science.

It’s never too early to introduce our youngest learners to artists who have significantly impacted the art world as they connect to other subject areas. Our nursery students were learning about Piet Mondrian and his abstract designs as they explored traffic signs and symbols. As Senior Kindergarten students learned about light, they created their own Starry Nights modelled after Vincent Van Gogh.?

Stellar creates an exclusive experience for students to help them artistically express themselves and constructively channel their emotions.?
