How Artificial Intelligence is changing the world!

Economists across the world agree that the single biggest threat to future job growth is neither immigration nor trade — it’s the artificial intelligence revolution already underway.

Joseph E. Aoun the author of Robot-Proof in his article “Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” writes that studies by Oxford University, McKinsey and Pricewaterhouse Coopers forecast that up to 50% of current jobs could be replaced by smart machines within the next 20 years. Already, more than 5 million U.S. factory jobs have been lost to automation since 2000. It’s become clear: If a job can be automated in the future, it will be. The next 20 years are going to be even faster-moving and more transformative than the 20 we just lived through. Predicting exactly what is going to happen is impossible.

So what is Artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a machine or a computer program to think and learn. The concept of AI is based on the idea of building machines capable of thinking, acting, and learning like humans.

Now it’s time for artificial intelligence; a field full of challenges that will without a doubt transform every field imaginable. While some people falsely consider AI a technology, the more accurate approach would be seeing it as a broad concept in which machines are able to deal with tasks in a way we would call intelligent or smart. Applications of AI and machine learning are exploding around the world as businesses buy into the fast-developing technology to cut costs, improve security and better serve their customers. One of the current innovation is IBM Watson which is a supercomputer that combines AI with superior analytical software and is a fully-optimized question answering system - and it processes at a rate of 80 teraflops (trillion floating-point operations per second).

AI can do everything from using drones for medical deliveries to helping lawyers prepare for court. AI created Eva, a digital personal assistant for the workplace to make meetings more productive. Some life extension start-up company uses AI to help people live longer by looking for small molecules in your bloodstream that are predictive of mortality and to focus on for drug discovery that might help to extend life. This is exciting in terms of driving innovation in medicine and security, but frightening if we think long-term. It’s only a matter of time before the intellectual capacity of machines surpasses human intellect, so we must proceed with caution. Machines will be able to drive our cars, cook food, and even diagnose diseases. This is exciting, but we need to start thinking about how societies will adapt to this new system.

A Tata Consultancy survey of 850 companies reported in the Harvard Business Review assesses how businesses use AI today. IT companies are AI leaders, with 44 percent relying on artificial intelligence to recognize and combat security intrusions. Other significant uses of AI are resolving users’ technical problems and monitoring internal compliance

What’s less clear is how educational institutions — the incubators of human talent — will respond to this sea change in the future of work. Beyond simply conferring degrees, the foundational purpose of colleges and universities must be to educate — and that means equipping people of all ages, at all stages of their careers, to build successful and fulfilling lives. This means we need to take several important steps to make our students robot-proof. But a modernized curriculum will not be enough. Students must also gain workplace experience before fully entering the workforce

In the New York Times bestseller book "The Industries of the Future, written by Alec Ross explains to us what changes are coming in the next ten years, highlighting the best opportunities for progress and explaining why countries thrive or sputter. He examines the specific fields that will most shape our economic future, including robotics, cybersecurity, the commercialization of genomics, the next step for big data, and the coming impact of digital technology on money and markets. By rising to the challenge of artificial intelligence, universities with the audacity to change will represent humanity’s best chance to win the jobs of the future. When it comes to AI, this becomes an even greater mission as we potentially have the capabilities of changing our world in greater ways every day.

Regardless of how artificial intelligence develops in the years ahead, almost all futurists agree that the world will forever change as a result of advances in AI.

Great article! The question is, what are the jobs of the future as well? If AI is the future, what is the human job force future? What are the new job opportunities that AI will open for us?
