The impact of AI on our world is boundless. The long-anticipated Age of AI has arrived, slowly but surely, much like how bankruptcy occurs in Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises." Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in November of the previous year, we have witnessed countless ways in which AI is poised to reshape our lives. From jobs to art, education to even dad jokes, the potential for AI to influence our world knows no bounds.

However, amid the ongoing debate surrounding AI, there's one critical aspect that often goes overlooked: how we can utilize AI not just to perform tasks for humans but to connect more deeply with our humanity itself. This question hinges on the understanding that regardless of the regulations in place, AI remains a tool, and its impact ultimately depends on how we, as humans, wield it.
In a New York Times piece, Thomas Friedman referred to this as our "Promethean moment," drawing parallels with Prometheus, the Greek god who stole fire and bestowed it upon humanity. Google CEO Sundar Pichai echoed a similar sentiment in 2018, asserting that "AI is probably the most important thing humanity has ever worked on. I think of it as something more profound than electricity or fire." Indeed, fire, smartphones, and the internet are all tools that have enabled tremendous progress, yet they also carry the potential to consume us if not used wisely.

The key to ensuring that humanity harnesses AI for its benefit lies in our ability to unite a critical mass of people who work with empathy, care, and connection. Despite the breakneck pace of AI development, marked by constant breakthroughs, ethical dilemmas, and doomsday predictions, there's a sense that we have entered a new era. As Bruce Feiler notes in "Life Is in the Transitions," periods of disruption and transition can offer opportunities for insight and wisdom. These times force us to shed the non-essential and reaffirm what truly matters, which is precisely what is happening now. This is why there is optimism that this moment can be one of transformation and renewal.
While our current discourse on AI often leans towards a futuristic, almost science-fiction perspective, AI also has the potential to reconnect us with a deeper and neglected part of ourselves. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once remarked that AI won't change the deep biological aspects of our lives. "I think we will still really care about interaction with other people… I think the stuff that people cared about 50,000 years ago is more likely to be the stuff that people care about 100 years from now than 100 years ago."
The Enlightenment era was marked by remarkable scientific discoveries, celebrating reason and knowledge. Yet, it also led us to believe that life is solely defined by two metrics: money and power. In the process, we lost sight of the third metric, which encompasses the very essence of our humanity—our well-being, wisdom, sense of wonder, and capacity for giving. AI, by relieving us of mundane tasks that have consumed our time for centuries, has the potential to highlight our essential humanity. With AI removing the noise, the signal of our humanity becomes clearer.

Much like the astronauts of Apollo 8, who journeyed to the moon only to discover the Earth, our quest to make machines mimic humans might reveal what truly makes us unique. While we focus on making machines more human, we may find ourselves reconnecting with our deepest human traits.
The Turing test, which measures how closely machines mimic humans, might inadvertently expose our narrow definition of humanity. As we strive to align AI with human values to avoid harm, we should simultaneously use AI to broaden and deepen our understanding of these values.
Imagine if AI, already adept at diagnosing physical health, could expand its purview to encompass our spiritual well-being. It could serve as a guide on our journey toward greater health and resilience, offering nudges on diet, sleep, exercise, stress management, and human connection, while also providing personalized recommendations from sacred texts, poetry, and quotes that help us reconnect with our inner peace, wisdom, and strength.
Reid Hoffman, a central figure in AI development, has called for AI to elevate humanity. This means not just giving everyone a medical assistant or tutor but potentially providing everyone with a spiritual guide as well. Regardless of our beliefs, connecting with something larger than ourselves is a fundamental aspect of human thriving, and AI can serve as a tool to amplify and deepen this facet of our humanity.
In using AI to offload algorithms and optimization, we free ourselves to fully embrace what makes us uniquely human. Dr. Lisa Miller's research highlights our inherent neurological drive for spirituality. Engaging with this aspect of our humanity is a choice, a muscle we can strengthen or let atrophy.
As we tackle the alignment problem in AI, let us also use AI to explore and enhance the timeless aspects of our human values. Through this dual approach, we can make AI a force that truly elevates humanity. In the words of Joseph Campbell, as we navigate the hero's journey that we are all on, we may discover that what truly matters is at the center of our own existence.
