How to approach your people leader to solve problems creatively

We will always face business challenges. Believe me, after 20+ years in the enterprise SaaS world, I can attest to that! But from what I’ve found in my career, is that, in many cases, the best way to overcome professional obstacles is by working through them thoughtfully and collaboratively in partnership with your people leader.??

Most managers will deeply appreciate it if you approach them with well-researched problems that are linked to the wider company goals and propose solutions to reach an outcome that benefits the collective.?

It’s one of the most underrated life skills and yes, it does take some boldness and extra initiative. But it won’t just benefit the company, it will make you stand out and propel your career forward.?

On top of that, creative problem solving is one of our valued Si capabilities, or, in other words, a core behavior we reward and hire for. But while it’s our leaders' job to provide the context for you to understand the 'why' and where to focus, accountability goes both ways. And the best way we can get there is by thinking about how we can solve problems together. So, to set the tone, I asked my fellow ELT members how you go about cultivating it:?

Six best practice tips, according to Siteimprove Executive Leadership??

Do your research and come with data??

“Write up a thoughtful hypothesis and a framing for the solution. Then seek advice from others, do some research that includes contextualized data, and present it with a strong hook, focused on the “why”. Arjang Parsa , Chief Product and Technology Officer?

Align with company goals

“By framing your case within the context of company goals, you will demonstrate how your solution addresses critical issues affecting company or departmental goals. People leaders are measured against these goals so believe me; they will be more likely to listen!” – David King-Harris , GM Commercial EMEA and APJ?

?

Positioning is everything??

“Frame it as a ’we problem’ not a ‘me problem'. A people leader’s job is to take friction out of the system, so present your case to show how and why it will make their work more efficient and effective for the team and the wider business, so it becomes a win-win situation." - Izabela Misiorny , Chief Marketing Officer??

Present your problem, as well as solutions and recommendations?

“One of the most helpful ways to present is the 1-3-1 method: identify 1 problem, come up with 3 options that could solve this and 1 recommendation. Keep your presentation concise and clear, with plenty of time for discussion”. – Britt Provost , Chief Human Resources Officer?

Come prepared to handle objections??

“To make the most of your time, be prepared to be challenged and have your potential answers ready. Actively listen and ask clarifying questions to facilitate brainstorming and making notes before coming to agreed next steps”. – Gary Higgins , GM North America??

Operate with Integrity and Accountability?

“As challenges arise, it is good to remember that we are only as good as our words and actions. Lead with empathy, integrity, and accountability as you follow through on your commitments, communicating on agreed upon deliverables and informing your teammates when things change.” - Elliott DeLoach , Chief Finance Officer?

Transform your manager-employee relationship into a powerful creative partnership?

By following this method in a thoughtful, respectful, and professional manner, I can assure you that any manager at Siteimprove and beyond will appreciate you taking this initiative. Even if you don’t see the outcome you’d hoped for, it’s still a great look. Remember, the most courageous ideas are often the ones that lead to the most impactful results, and that’s how leaders are made.?

Fantastic post! Tackling challenges truly shapes our paths. ?? It's crucial to foster open communication and mutual respect within teams - alignment can drive success. What a great insight!
