How to approach tax credit incentives without making your donors yawn.

Many donors don’t know about the tax incentives to donate to your organization. Take the time to remind them - it’s a win for both of you. Getting your donor base more familiar with tax incentives will come in handy especially at year-end (which you should already be thinking about!). Here are a few ways you can use tax breaks as incentive:

  • Make it personal: Customize your ask to your donor. If they’ve been donating throughout the year, remind them of their record to help them make the most of tax incentives. “Based on our records, donating $50 today will bring your tax credit total up to $200 for the year!”
  • Make it tangible: Donors might be aware of tax returns for giving generally, but don’t have the up-to-date numbers handy. Have the math ready by building a tax calculator on your website “If you donate $100 today you will receive $75 back in tax credits.”
  • Make it effective: Show donors their effective donation. “Your $50 donation could be a $200 donation eligible for $150 in tax refunds.”?
  • Make it urgent: When it’s time for year-end fundraising, remind your donors of the deadline and that their tax returns are right around the corner. Try designing a countdown clock and deadline driven subject lines!
