How to Approach Prospects in Network Marketing

Approaching and inviting prospects that could potentially be open to learning more about your products or business opportunity is one of the most important skills you must develop as a network marketer. The biggest mistake that people make in network marketing is that they don't know how to properly approach a prospect. You have to approach people with the right posture and mindset, or else you run the risk of chasing them away before you even have a chance to share your business opportunity.
I've been in this profession for 3 years now, and I have made A LOT of appointments with many prospects during this time. People either have an interest and are ready to get started, have no interest at all, and some people will tell you they have interest but when the actual call, meeting, or event comes, they come up with excuses or don't show up. Nothing feels worse than being let down by your prospect. I know the feeling because I have been let down hundreds of times. However, in any business, it's par for the course. What kept me going was my belief in what I am doing, posturing myself for success, and persistence. I've had to learn how to invite prospects to conference calls, corporate events and meetings, as well as online virtual events the correct and more inviting way. Yes, sometimes people do stand you up, but there is a proper and professional approach to getting stood up less and get more people to actually show up to your call, meeting, or event.
The Problematic Approach and Invitation
The problem most people have with the initial contact or invitation is that they pitch their opportunity right off the bat in an annoying or spammy way, and then feel bad or awkward doing it. Then you become known as the person to avoid. You have more of a hunter approach or mentality. The problem with this approach and invitation is that it comes across as you don't really care about relationships….all you care about is getting that new recruit or sale. Even worse, the people you get to join your business do the same thing, fail at it too, and then quit.
The Professional Approach and Invitation
Have you ever studied how successful people approach and invite prospects? They build relationships and friendships. Their goal isn't to immediately recruit prospects. Their initial objective is to educate prospects on what they have to offer and then let those prospects decide if it is something they want to do. Put yourself in your prospect's shoes and think about what would be attractive to them. Build relationships and then offered common-sense solutions to people's problems. Learn where they are in life and what struggles they are facing. Let them know that you are genuinely interested in them and their lives.
Form relationships with your prospects. This is why so many people feel like they are being hounded when first approached, because they are not posturing themselves as a leader or successful business owner. Instead, they think that they have to jump right in and tell their prospects why they're going to miss this great opportunity if they don't sign up right now.
Look for Individuals that are Open to Learning More
Look for and share information with those individuals who are open to learning more. Don't focus your energy on how you can get the people that don't believe in your business opportunity to believe in it. Just focus on who is open and don't care about who doesn't believe. This doesn't mean that you should be arrogant and/or mean to those who don't want to know more about your business opportunity. It is okay that it's not a good fit for them. Truthfully, your business opportunity isn't going to be a good fit for everyone. Wish them well and keep going. If you do this, you'll be successful. And, when you create your success, some of those doubters will eventually join you too. But only if you posture yourself for success and focus on who's open to learning more rather than trying to convince the doubters or people that are just not interested at all.
This is the most important skill that you must learn. You don't need to be good in sales in order to succeed. But you do need to know what to properly say to your prospects. Don't be pushy. Posture yourself as a leader in your business. Simply let others that are open to learning more know that you are in business and you do this by contacting your prospect and getting them to take the time to listen to a presentation or read an informative/helpful article that explains the details in a nutshell.
Think of it this way…if you opened up a new clothing boutique, would you force everyone to shop there? Or would you not tell anyone at all about your new clothing boutique because you are too scared to tell people out of fear of rejection? If you opened a new clothing boutique, I'm pretty sure you would tell everyone about it. And the same goes for your network marketing business. It is like sowing seeds. Your goal is not to have every seed become a big oak tree. Your goal is to spread the seeds and some will blow away, some will be eaten by birds and squirrels, some will grow a little bit, and some will grow into big oak trees.
Explain the Business Model
Many people are skeptical of network marketing to begin with. This is why it's important to explain the business model to them thoroughly. Many times, people are really misinformed about the business as a whole. Starting an online network marketing business is the lowest risk and lowest overhead way for you to start a business, period. You don't have to worry about shipping, distribution, payroll, accounting, human resources, trademark attorneys, supply chain management, organizational charts, currency conversions, and so on. However, because it's the lowest risk and lowest overhead way when it comes to starting a business, a lot of people who have never had any training on digital marketing strategies, sales, and running a business, fall short. And, most network marketing companies provide marketing materials but they don't provide training and coaching on successful digital marketing strategies. So when most people join a network marketing business, they hype and spam all over social media. Many bystanders see this and think that is all that is being taught in this industry as a whole, when it's not.
I believe that if you take the professional approach to inviting your prospects to learn more about your products and business opportunity, you will find that the invitation becomes much less frustrating. You'll become comfortable with the process, and you'll find that over time you will get more results.

8 个月Thanks so much for such an interesting article. I've been in business for many years and as I get older, I find that I'd rather be part of a team to get the job done, rather than wearing many hats and burning out. Network marketing fits that picture. I've been confused about how to approach people. Do I find network marketers as a priority, or find people looking for business opportunities and then get them through the 'network marketing' block? Do I appoach the average person and show them why they should consider an alternative to a job, or sell them the product? Which I'm used to. Do I sell them the business, or do I sell the credibility of the company, the product and network marketing all at the same time? That just seems like I'm defending my approach and trying to convince them that I'm credible and not just some snake oil peddler. My industry is similar, except the products are a portable and personal stem cell regeneration technology. I absolutely love the range of products, it's worked for me and especially my mother-in-law, who had a stroke 2 months ago and is already walking, albeit with a cane. and I'm starting to get amazing results. I want to register more business owners than customers. Please help! Thank you.

6 年You are so spot on Michelle! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I found these exact techniques helped me excel in my career. I'm not a sale rep, I'm a colleague who likes to inform others of solutions that are available for them. They're either looking for a solution or not. To me it doesn't matter, I'm building relationships that I can learn and grow from.
