How to Approach Job Interviews: Insights from an Experienced Recruiter

Getting a job can be a challenging task, especially for recent graduates. They often find themselves asking questions such as, “How can I pass an interview?” While there is no single answer to this question, networking is an essential aspect of the job search process. Networking allows you to meet potential employers and colleagues, and it helps you build a rapport with them. When you network, you get the opportunity to know people beyond their professional persona, and this can help you avoid meeting them for the first time during an interview.

While networking is crucial, it is not the only aspect that employers consider during the interview process. From my experience, when interviewing candidates, I do not focus solely on their transcripts or where they studied. Instead, I look for common interests with the candidates and consider whether I would enjoy their company. During the interview, I am subconsciously comparing the candidate's personality to those of others I have worked with, and I recall how others performed with the same personality profile. I also listen to their language patterns and watch their body language. I am looking for confidence, but not someone who is overly confident. I am also looking at their general attitude. Are they selfish, arrogant, or down to earth?

In my experience, people often hire individuals who are similar to them. After making first impressions, I start to think about the candidate in more detail. I look at their previous work experiences, check whether they enjoyed their course of study and why, and examine their hobbies and interests for compatibility. I also look for candidates who play music, dance, sing, act, draw, paint, or engage in something creative, or who play sports. This is not just about compatibility, but it also shows me that they have a life and are more than likely balanced. People who are balanced are better able to express themselves with clients, and this can be a valuable asset to any company.

First impressions are vital during the interview process. As an interviewer, I ask questions about the candidate's previous experiences or lack of them to make a decision. I look at their skills and see if they have done something similar before. If they have no experience, I often wonder why. I listen for someone who can succinctly speak and collect their thoughts before speaking. I look for language patterns that match mine, and I often find that someone with no experience is a huge red flag. This triggers questions such as, "How do you know you like your profession?" or "What have you been doing?" Surely, you could have secured some sort of experience?

Networking can provide you with more time to understand each other, and any issues can be discussed over time. People will change their minds and give you an opportunity if they trust what they hear and can see from your actions that you do want to work. However, networking is just the first step. The interview is where you need to shine and prove that you are the best candidate for the job.

In conclusion, passing an interview is not just about having the right qualifications or work experience. It is also about making a good first impression and showing your personality, interests, and hobbies. Networking is a crucial aspect of the job search process that allows you to build relationships with potential employers and colleagues. When you network, you get to know people beyond their professional persona, and this can help you avoid meeting them for the first time during an interview. However, the interview is where you need to prove that you are the best candidate for the job. Show your skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm, and be confident in yourself.
