How to Approach a Job Interview With a Sales Mindset

How to Approach a Job Interview With a Sales Mindset

Having a salesperson's mindset puts you in a better position to negotiate for the job offer because it allows you to approach the interview process in a strategic and proactive way.

A salesperson's mindset is all about understanding the needs of the customer (in this case the employer) and providing a solution to those needs. By researching the company and the role before the interview, you can better understand the employer's needs and tailor your responses to align with those needs.

During the interview, a salesperson's mindset will also help you to be more persuasive and confident in communicating your qualifications and how you can help the company achieve its goals. Active listening is also key to understanding the employer's concerns, and tailor your pitch to address them.

Additionally, a salesperson's mindset will also help you to be more effective in the negotiation process. You'll be able to identify key factors that are important to the employer and use them to negotiate a better deal. For example, if you know that the company values flexibility, you can emphasize your ability to work remotely or adapt to changing schedules.

Finally, a salesperson's mindset also involves follow-up and persistence. After the interview, a salesperson would follow up with the employer to reiterate their interest in the role and to address any concerns that may have come up during the interview. This follow-up can help to keep you top of mind and increase the chances of getting the job offer.

Overall, having a salesperson's mindset can help you to be more effective in communicating your value, building a connection with the employer, and negotiating the best deal for yourself.

  • Research the company, the role and the interviewer.?
  • Identify the pain points: Just as you would with a customer, identify the pain points of the company and the role you're applying for. Show how your qualifications and experience can help solve those problems and bring value to the company.
  • Build rapport: Just as you would with a customer, build rapport with the interviewer. Show your enthusiasm for the role and the company, and find common ground to establish a connection.
  • Provide a solution: Just as you would with a customer, provide a solution to the company's pain points. Show how your qualifications, skills, and experience align with the role and how you can help the company achieve its goals.
  • Close the deal: Just as you would with a customer, close the deal. Express your interest in the opportunity. In sales terms, closing the deal would mean asking for the sale/order. In the job interview realm it means showing interest in the company and telling them why you think you would be the best person for the job. But the key is, don;t wait to be asked “Why do you think you are the best candidate for this job?” Say it while you answer other questions, squeeze it in your sales pitch.
  • Put your best foot forward: Just as you would with a customer, be prepared for the interview. Have your success stories on speed-dial and use them at the best time during the meeting for maximum wow effect. Practice your responses and make sure you have examples ready to back up your qualifications and experience.
  • Create urgency and scarcity: A salesperson's mindset also involves creating a sense of scarcity and urgency. Find a way to show the employer how it is important for them to let you know as soon as possible whether you got the job. For example, you could tell them that you have several interviews this week and you are interested in this job, but you wouldn't be able to decline another offer if you don't know if you got this job or not. This creates a sense of urgency for the employer to make a decision and can increase your chances of getting an offer.

In short, by approaching a job interview with a sales mindset, you increase your chances of landing the job.
