HOW TO APPLY FOR UNADVERTISED JOB

Nigerian companies are hunting for new employees and 70% of these companies do not make use of recruitment agencies or make a public announcement of the job opportunities available. Instead of publicly advertising the positions, they carry out internal recruiting among employees by word of mouth or by searching for uploaded CVs on their career pages and emails. And if you have your CV submitted, you will catch them right on time.

Most times, companies or employers search online for new employees who can do the job. If you had uploaded your CV or had sent a mail before, they might stumble on your CV. And if your CV is impressive, then chances are that you may be considered for an interview.?This will save the employers time and resources and also save you the trouble of having to search for a job through adverts.

Most companies have a career section on their website that may include available positions and how to submit resumes. Many of these companies’ career sections include either an email address to send your CV or an online application form that must be completed. Examples are MTN, Deloitte, KPMG, Mavin records, Wema Bank, Unity Bank and many others etc.

When sending out your resume, don’t write to Human Resources; they will just tell you they don't have any openings. Send a clear, crisp, convincing letter to the top manager in the functional area where you want to work. For example, if it is in the Tax department for an Accounting firm, send it to the executive in charge of Tax. You may have to make a phone call to the company to get the person's name, but the personalized approach is ten times better than "To Whom It May Concern." All the latter says is that you don't care enough to find out who the person was.

This approach can be even more productive as applying for a position irrespective of whether they have published openings or not do yield result. Applying for an advertised position can be more competitive, as everyone wants to get the same job you are applying for.?However, aim for a mix, apply for 70% of companies who are hiring, and 30% of companies who don’t appear to be hiring.
