A few weeks ago, I was home for Christmas. Always a great occasion to catch up with friends and family. You know that saying "You attract who you are". My friend introduced me to a fantastic tech entrepreneur with 57 businesses. Yes, you read right. I'm running 3 brands and I think that's more than enough. For hours, I was fascinated by the fantastic ecosystem he has created and he told me about the Streisand effect. I had to share it with you as one day you may be subject to it...
What is it?
The Streisand effect is a phenomenon that occurs when an attempt to suppress or hide information has the unintended consequence of drawing more attention to it. In a business context, the Streisand effect can have negative consequences if it leads to increased public scrutiny or negative attention for the company. It's important for you as a business to be aware of the potential for the Streisand effect and to take steps to avoid it.
Attempting to suppress negative reviews or criticism
Let's imagine your company receives a negative review on a customer review website, social media platform, or through other channels. If your company tries to hide or remove the review, it may draw more attention to the issue and lead to increased scrutiny of the company. For example, suppose your company tries to remove a negative review from a customer review website. In that case, it may lead to more people becoming aware of the review and the company's attempts to suppress it, resulting in increased negative attention for your company.
Censoring employees or customers
Let's imagine your company censors or silences employees or customers who speak out about negative experiences or issues, it may lead to more people becoming aware of the issue and the company's attempts to suppress it. For example, suppose your company has a policy of punishing employees who speak out about negative experiences or issues within the company. In that case, it may lead to more people becoming aware of the issue and the company's attempts to silence employees, resulting in increased negative attention for the company.
Trying to cover up mistakes or misconduct
Let's imagine your company tries to cover up mistakes or misconduct, it may lead to increased scrutiny and negative attention if the cover-up is discovered. For example, if a company tries to cover up an instance of misconduct or wrongdoing by one of its employees, and the cover-up is eventually discovered, it may lead to increased scrutiny and negative attention for the company, as the public may view the company's actions as unethical or dishonest.
How to avoid the Streisand effect
To avoid the Streisand effect in the business, it's important for companies to be transparent and honest when addressing negative feedback or criticism, and to avoid attempting to suppress or hide information that could be damaging to the company's reputation. This means being open and forthcoming about any mistakes or issues that may arise, and working to address and resolve them promptly and effectively. By being transparent and taking a proactive approach to addressing negative feedback or criticism, companies can help to mitigate the potential negative consequences of the Streisand effect.

2 年What an important piece of information. I know of many companies that try to silence their employees and hide the founders' misconduct- usually hiding it under the umbrella of being a "female founder" or "employees do not have the right skill set" when the reality is different. We have yet to see how these will unveil and more people will speak up.
