How to get a job abroad, especially from Nigeria and other African countries

There are two steps you must follow if you want a job abroad. The first is to make sure you have an in-demand skill or degree. The second step is to begin the application process.

?Step 1: Have a skill

Let me just put it out there: Unless you have a professional degree like a nurse, doctor, or engineer, having practical skills is your surest bet to landing your first job in a foreign country, especially when you’re a fresh university graduate. Learn a high-paying skill. No, you are not required to attend university for another four years. If you’re determined, which I’m sure you are, 6–12 months is enough time to take you from beginner to expert.

Some examples of these highly demanded skills are:

  • Frontend and backend software developers
  • Social media, digital marketing, and other marketing skills
  • Graphics designers, videographers, photographers, illustrators, animators, and others with cinematography-related skills
  • Handymen like carpenters, plumbers, hairstylists, etc.
  • Automobile repairs and engineers
  • And of course, medical practitioners like doctors and nurses

Check out our?blog?for more detailed information about lucrative professions and skills you can learn about here.

Step 2: Start applying for jobs.

There are two ways to go about this.

  1. Procure your visa, arrive in the country, and do the job search there.
  2. Apply directly to the companies or through job sites from Nigeria or your home country.

If you have family or friends in the country you plan on relocating to, then the first option is for you. They should be willing to provide housing and cover some of your living expenses while you look for work. Or if you have enough money stored away that will last you all through your period of job hunting, that will work too.

But who are we kidding? This post is not for the “rich kids.” I’m guessing you don’t have a billionaire sponsor, hence why you’re still reading this post.

So I recommend you go with the second option. Yes. You can apply directly to companies abroad or through job sites like?Elite Digest. We act as a bridge between young, talented individuals and reputable companies all over the world ready to hire, and when you sign up with us, you receive?weekly job updates?that match your skill set.

Tips on How to Get a Job Abroad Even Before Traveling

Research the country.

Working abroad doesn’t have to be in the UK or America. First, write out at least 5 countries you like, and take your time to research each one. Find out about their immigration policies, cost of living, tax laws, standard human rights, employment rights, healthcare, etc.

Some of the best countries with great economies and conducive working environments are:

  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Switzerland
  • Singapore
  • Poland
  • Hungary
  • Slovakia

Avoid cities that are competitive.

Cities like London, Paris and New York have competitive job markets. You don’t work to be unemployed; rather, look for countries or cities with a high demand for skilled labor and flexible immigration policies.

Personalize your CV.

Make your CV fit not only the jobs you apply for but also the country. If you’re moving to the US, you’ll need a resume, not a CV, and your spelling and grammar rules will also change. You can reach out to us if you need help?reviewing or upgrading your CV.

Learn the language.

To work in non-English-speaking countries like Germany and Singapore, you’ll need to learn their language. Plus, language proficiency will be an added advantage to your CV.

Network?

If done right, networking with professionals in your field will help you greatly. Attend job fairs, connect with old friends and colleagues who are working abroad, and lastly, get active on LinkedIn; your next employer could be just a DM away. To get started, all you need is a well-optimized?LinkedIn profile.

Have your international passport ready.

Most people make the mistake of waiting until they have received a job offer before getting their international passports, which can delay their travel plans.

Study abroad

Lastly, one of the ways to kick-start your dream of living and working abroad is by going through the study route. which is what I did. So after I finished my BSc in Nigeria, I applied for a Master’s program in Germany. This made it easier to get a job and gain a permanent residence permit. If you’re interested in learning how you can start applying for visas to study abroad,?SetLinn?has got you covered.

Now, I know that studying abroad can be quite expensive, which is why we have current lists of?scholarship programs?you can apply for immediately.
