How to Apply for Higher Studies in the USA

For General Information

In this post, I will try to provide guidance on applying for a PhD or higher studies in the USA based on my knowledge, so no one feels disappointed if I can't answer personally.

Timeline: I started searching for universities in late August and secured admission in November. I applied to almost 4-5 universities, targeting the Spring session, but got accepted into two for the Fall session. The rest of the applications are still pending.

Some people are asking if a 2-3 year study gap is an issue. I completed my MS in 2018 and applied in 2023. So, in my opinion, the gap is not a problem.

1: Scholarship: PhD programs in the USA are usually fully funded (I am from the field of Chemistry, and all my friends and colleagues received fully funded PhD offers). You do not need to apply separately for funding.

2: Criteria: Your Statement of Purpose (SOP), CV, academic record, and recommendations play a key role. IELTS (or any other English language test) is mandatory. GRE has been waived for many subjects (like Chemistry). In the SOP (in my opinion), you must convince them that you will return to your home country, or have other genuine reasons or motivations.

3: Publications: Publications are not mandatory. They can add to your points but are not required (you should not refrain from applying just because you don't have any).

4: Experience: Experience (such as teaching) matters a lot (because PhD candidates often do Teaching Assistantships as well). Also, be sure to mention any professional degrees like B.Ed, M.Ed, etc.

5: Volunteer Work, Extracurricular Activities, etc.: Include any type of volunteer work you have done in your CV (in a concise manner).

6: Application Fee: It is recommended to apply to a few universities with an application fee (to face less competition, as the average fee is approximately 60-75 dollars). However, to get a waiver, try writing to the given addresses; most universities waive the fees as well.

7: NEVER HESITATE TO APPLY.

8: Deadlines: Applications for the Fall session start from August until January. Apply before the priority deadlines. Application deadlines and requirements vary from program to program within the same university as well. So, be careful.

9: Eligibility: You can apply directly for a PhD after your BS as well.

10: Application Tracks: A. Umbrella Program: You only need to submit your application on the portal; there is no need to contact a professor. B. Direct Admissions: You have to make contact with a professor.

For Aspirants Asking HOW TO APPLY:

  1. Simply Google the desired university with the department name.
  2. Go to the department page.
  3. Click on the graduate program requirements.
  4. Check where you stand.
  5. Then go to the application process and follow the steps.

PS: Email IDs or coordinators are always provided; email them if you have any genuine queries.

May Allah make it easy for everyone.
