How to Apply for a Grant

Written by Jaz Freeman

Grants can be a game-changer when it comes to funding your projects and ideas, especially for teachers looking to bring hands-on learning and interactive experiences into their classrooms.

If you have a strong project or idea, and if you write a well-written proposal, you will have a good chance of being successful.

Whether you're planning cross-curricular programs or innovative projects, grants provide an opportunity to make your vision a reality. They can come from a variety of sources, including government agencies, foundations, and corporations.

Grant Resources

  • Grants.gov: Grants.gov is a website that lists all of the federal grants that are currently available. You can search for grants by keyword, topic, or agency. The website also provides information on how to apply for grants.
  • Foundation Directory Online: Foundation Directory Online is a database of foundations that offer grants. You can search the database by keyword, location, and other criteria. The database also provides information on how to apply for grants from each foundation.
  • GuideStar: GuideStar is a website that provides information on nonprofits, including foundations. You can use the website to find foundations that offer grants in your area of interest. The website also provides information on how to apply for grants from each foundation.
  • The federal STEM website https://www.ed.gov/stem has a list of their current grant offerings.
  • Your local library: Many libraries have resources on grant writing. You can check out books and articles on the topic, and you may also be able to attend workshops on grant writing.
  • Grant writing consultants: There are also grant writing consultants who can help you write your grant proposal. These consultants can be expensive, but they can also be very helpful, especially if you are new to grant writing.

Once you have found some resources on grant writing, it is important to start planning your grant proposal. The first step is to identify your project or idea and to define your goals. What do you want to achieve with your project? Once you have defined your goals, you can start to develop a budget for your project. How much money do you need to complete your project?

Once you have a budget, you can start to write your grant proposal. The grant proposal should include the following information:

  • Executive summary: This is a brief overview of your project, including your goals, budget, and timeline.
  • Problem statement: This section describes the problem that your project is addressing.
  • Project description: This section provides a detailed description of your project, including your goals, methods, and timeline.
  • Evaluation plan: This section describes how you will evaluate the success of your project.
  • Budget: This section provides a detailed budget for your project.
  • Timeline: This section provides a timeline for your project.

Once you have finished writing your grant proposal, you need to submit it to the grant maker. The grant maker will review your proposal and decide whether or not to fund your project.

Additional Tips

Start early.

The grant writing process can take several weeks or even months. It is important to start early so that you have enough time to write a strong proposal.

Follow the instructions carefully.

Be sure to follow the instructions that are provided by the grant maker. This will help to ensure that your proposal is complete and that it meets the grant maker's requirements.

Ask for Feedback.

Once you have written a draft of your proposal, ask someone to review it and give you feedback. This will help you to identify any areas that need improvement. Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you need help writing your grant proposal, there are many resources available to you. You can talk to a grant writing consultant, or you can seek help from your local library or nonprofit organization.

Applying for a grant can be a daunting task, but it is important to remember that grant makers are looking to fund projects that will make a difference.
