How Apple's update has already changed my ads
There's a lot of articles discussing how iPhone's newest update will affect Facebook advertising. According to Apple, "Privacy is a fundamental human right and at the core of everything we do. That’s why with iOS 14, we’re giving you more control over the data you share and more transparency into how it’s used."
The cliff notes version is that Facebook advertisers used to be able to use data such as location, websites viewed, and a number of other inputs to target people with their ads.
Now your iPhone and your MacBook are going to protect your information unless you give apps specific permission to give that way.
I run online ads for clients of mine that are in local areas, mostly brick and mortar businesses. The last 18 months I've been traveling around the world and I haven't seen any of the ads that I published for my clients.
Since I updated to the new Apple updates I am seeing ads served to me from the very ads I'm running for my clients even though I'm currently down in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and not up in the Seattle, WA area.
What does this mean? Well for one of my clients, a destination tourism area, I won't be able to serve the ads that I had been serving to Apple users that were physically located in the County that I was advertising.
It also means that good number of people that visit the websites of my clients, and then get served more ads specific to the pages that they visited, won't be an option for Apple users with the new update.
The update won't cause me to switch to "Android only" or specific Laptops, Apple users deserve to see my client's ads as well, it just means I'll have to think about this a little more, tighten up the way I do things, become a better advertiser.
