HOW APPLE MADE IT EASIER

Steve Berman, the plaintiff’s legal representative stated, “This hard-won settlement will bring meaningful improvements to the US iOS developers who distribute their digital wares through the App Store, especially for those small developers who bring so much creativity and energy to their work”. What settlement is being talked about, all of us are curious.?

As we know that Apple Inc. is the world’s largest technology company, yet it had some exclusive features that were considered to have a lack of understandability, and complex operations and hence, being complained about by the users. It develops its own operating system for all its devices which makes it highly exclusive, even to use the services or to have a business with it, with strict conditions.

The developers in the app review process too came up with their issues on the ability to engage with Apple. The reviews are taken to ensure the quality of apps in the app store and Apple invests significantly to be directly connected with developers for achieving its goals. Apple said, “App review is the human-led process of reviewing apps submitted to the app store to ensure they are reliable, performed as expected, respect user privacy, and are free of objectionable content.” Yet, the reviews led to a need to make amendments to its system.

Recently, Apple settled for the lawsuit or the settlement that Steven Berman’s statement stated, to allow developers to use payment systems outside of the app store which would allow the customers to communicate to them directly. Though the settlement is currently not yet approved by the US courts, Apple is quite clear about paving the way for its developers to use communications for sharing information about payment methods outside of the iOS apps.

The Apple settlement for this lawsuit was an outcome of Epic Games Lawsuit against it, the previous year. “The terms of the agreement will help make the app store an even better business opportunity for developers while maintaining the safe and trusted marketplace users love,” Apple said in a statement.

BEFORE THE AGREEMENT

  • Apple used to charge 30% on e-sales.
  • Only Apple payment gateway was allowed.
  • Apple never gave a portion of discount on products. It was either a 100% charge on the products or 100% off.
  • The app would be removed from the app store if it sidestepped Apple payment systems and in-app purchase commission.
  • A lot of restrictions on the apps.?


AFTER THIS AGREEMENT?

  • Easy payments outside the iOS apps: Now the payments can be made easily outside the iOS apps as Apple has allowed the developers to work with other platforms.
  • Better use of communications to connect with the customers: This new settlement by Apple will increase productivity and business opportunities among app users who can now communicate directly with them regarding payments issues.
  • Developers will not have to pay Apple a commission on any purchase that takes place outside their app or the app store: Apple will not even take developers’ share in addition to not taking the commission from the developers, which means developers would be able to keep the whole amount which may increase business opportunities and Apple users.?
  • Maintains a safer and trusted marketplace for the users: The success of Apple lies in providing the users with the best security services and trusted platforms. This would also allow Apple to increase their revenue as it takes a commission from every transaction that happens through apps, so this will lead to more profit for Apple!
  • It brings meaningful improvements to the US iOS developers who distribute their digital wares through the app store: Apple has provided its developers with a better and safer platform to work on. Apple wants its customer base well in every possible way, so it would never want its developers’ business to suffer due to any reason!
  • It is a boon to the small developers who come up with their creativity and hard work: Small developers can present themselves in the Apple store to earn through app development.
  • Apple will still maintain its 30% commission structure for the purchase in the app store: Along with this, for the next three years, it would have lowered the commission by up to 15% for small businesses. Apple has done this to encourage developer engagement on the app, thereby increasing the business.
  • A statistical transparent report: ?This will be made annually to reveal which and how many apps were rejected and the reason behind that.
  • Expansion of power points for developers: Apple will also expand the number of price points available to the developers for subscriptions, in-app purchases, and paid apps from fewer than 100 or more than 500.?
  • Freedom for the developers: Also, the developers will continue to set their own prices and Apple will not interfere with that.

This will help the companies like Netflix to bring back the payment option inside the app. Hope more companies will endure this major change accepted by apple.
