Whether or not to discuss hobbies in an interview is a topic with varying opinions, and the same goes for including them on your resume. I think it is a good idea to mention hobbies in these cases only:
- Your hobby reflects skills or qualities relevant to the job; or
- Your hobby aligns with the company's culture; or
- You share a hobby with the interviewer.
In situation 1, your hobby will showcase why you're a suitable match for the job. In scenario 2, your hobby will demonstrate why you align well with the company. And in case 3, your hobby will help you establish a connection with the interviewer.
If your hobbies don't fit into these categories, it might be best not to bring them up.
Now, if the interviewer asks about your hobbies, here's what you should do:
Most people have more than one hobby or at least a few favorite pastime activities. Consider all the things you enjoy in your free time and choose an activity that has a positive connection to work. For example:
- Reading: Reading can indicate intelligence, curiosity, and a love of learning. It can also show that you are open-minded and willing to explore new ideas.
- Writing: Writing can indicate creativity, communication skills, and a way with words. It can also show that you are organized and detail-oriented.
- Painting: Painting can indicate creativity, patience, focus, and discipline. It can also indicate innovation ability and originality.
- Cooking: Cooking can indicate creativity, patience, and a love of food. It can also show that you are organized and efficient.
- Individual sports: Passion for individual sports can indicate physical fitness, determination, and endurance. It can also show that you are independent and self-sufficient. However, it may not be best to mention them when the job entails a lot of teamwork.
- Traveling: Traveling can indicate open-mindedness, curiosity, and a love of adventure. It can also show that you are adaptable and resilient. Be careful with this one though; if you come across as a very keen traveler, the employer may assume that you will require a lot of time off.
- Gardening: Gardening can indicate patience, responsibility, and passion for growth. It can also be seen as a way to connect with nature and to learn about the environment, which can
- Collective sports: Collective sports like football or hockey can indicate teamwork and discipline. They can also be seen as a way to build leadership skills.
In any case, make sure you choose something you genuinely like, have experience with, and can talk about confidently.
