How Akamai's Enterprise Threat Protector can help fight the current hacking and ransomware endemic.

Domain Name System (DNS) is a critical part of any computer network, internet and infrastructure. DNS is a globally distributed database to find computers and servers routing the global internet. DNS is often targeted by hackers and malicious actors to disrupt and bring down web application services such as NHS computer systems currently being targeted.

How can Akamai help?

Akamai's globally distributed platform sees up to 32% of global internet traffic and stores up to 3.2 Petabytes of monitored attack traffic at any one time. This attack traffic is queried every hour using clever heuristics via Hadoop clusters to update Akamai's web application firewall and enterprise products and services to ensure the latest threats and malicious signatures are blocked at the edge of the internet where 95% of internet users are only one hop away from an Akamai server. (This means the attackers are too, and we can block them at source far away from your data centres).

Akamai's Enterprise Threat Protector service (ETP) uses a globally distributed DNS platform and acts as a DNS forwarder instead of recursive look up. This enables ETP to query our Cloud Security Intelligence engines to check for the latest threats and malware codes. 'We know malicious actors'. If an employee has been hacked or clicked on a phishing link in an email for example we can take that out of circulation very quickly. We also look for patterns in 'data advanced algorithms' (looking for embedded threats and signatures). Akamai's DNS engine will sit in the middle of your DNS infrastructure, monitor flow and provide visibility into your network.

Enterprise Threat Protector will see what all users are looking at including malicious content on their machines. Akamai's Cloud Security Intelligence platform provides additional breadth and depth for malicious discovery that a traditional virus scanning engine could not. We utilise big data analysis enabling intelligent blocking of malicious traffic, integrate with SIEM systems to give you 'situational awareness as to what is going on inside your network'.

Please contact me for a face to face meeting or inbox me for a confidential conversation if necessary, where I can introduce you to the relevant Akamai resource who can help.
