Are you tired of reading AI this AI that? From ChatGPT to Google's AI Overviews to AI-generated viral images, AI is literally everywhere. Well, ask the content writers who not only have to encounter AI every day but also have it significantly affect their careers.
As a content writer, I can attest to the fact that the content industry has undergone a massive shift in the last couple of years since the GenAI boom. While ChatGPT and Google Gemini promise to change your life, they have actually changed the lives of every writer working in the content industry.
Negative Impact of GenAI on Content Writers
First of all, I would like to point out that this article in no way undermines GenAI's amazing capabilities. I am only highlighting how content writers are facing career challenges due to these tools.
The first challenge that arose after the introduction of ChatGPT was the lack of employment. I am sure we've heard stories of content writers being fired because the company thought they could use AI for all their content needs. Moreover, the number of content writing jobs also decreased substantially.
When I started content writing back in 2018, it was all the rage. Everyone was talking about how this industry holds so much promise as the need for content writers is only going to grow. And then, cut to 2022, tables have turned. However, many thought these tools were just a trend and that companies would soon realize they needed humans.
Guess what? In a few months, human-generated content became a commodity of its own because Google said it would not tolerate robotic content. So, it was time to celebrate, right? Unfortunately, not. Now, we have AI content detector tools, which suddenly made matters worse.
This created the second challenge. Many organizations care for these AI-free reports by AI detectors more than the content quality. So, they are using robots again to discard our content as robotic. Great!

But if matters ended here, it would still be fine. The third challenge is that there are vast differences between companies' requirements for writers. Some companies encourage the use of AI tools, while others want you to say that you have never used AI for any part of the writing process.
So, imagine being a writer in this industry where half of the companies want you to use AI for content ideation, outlining, and creating a rough draft, and then they expect you to refine it with your human skills. And, like, this is good. So, you get used to working like this. But then you get a client who is completely against using AI for anything. Now, you have to employ a totally different process of writing content, where all you're focusing on is not to get flagged by AI detectors.
The Dilemma
In the end, the only thing I want is for the industry to make up its mind. Are we boycotting AI, or are we using it to some extent?
Another food for thought is whether it really matters in the end. If you write a blog post with the help of AI and it ranks number 1 on Google for your primary keyword, does it matter how it was written? If the content leads to more sales and conversions for the brand, then isn't that the main goal behind the content efforts?
Why are we wasting time proving that a piece of content was not written by AI instead of focusing on creating awesome content for the audience?

4 个月Sakcham Tiwari This was a nuanced and much needed take on this debate that has been going on since 2022. I agree with you on the fact that how does it matter if we are producing content using AI or by ourselves as long as we are delivering the results. At the same time, I vouch for not being completely dependent on AI as well. I feel as long as we are using AI as an assistant in our writing process, there is no harm. Just don't let AI become the boss of you.
