Media company replaces Spanish staff with AI

According to a report from Gizmodo, the parent company GO Media has fired the staff of its Spanish-language site, Gizmodo en Espa?ol, and replaced them with AI translations of English articles.

The move is part of a trend among media companies experimenting with AI tools to maximise content output while minimising labor costs. However, this practice has faced criticism, as AI translations may contain errors and lack cultural knowledge.

The transition to AI translation has not gone smoothly, with some articles abruptly switching from Spanish to English due to glitches. Spanish-speaking audiences may suffer from the loss of original reporting, as AI translation technology still cannot fully replace human translators.

TikTok Hit With $370M Fine In Europe Over Children’s Privacy Missteps

TikTok has been hit with a €345 million fine ($370 million) by the Irish Data Protection Commission for violating Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regarding children's privacy.

The investigation focused on TikTok's handling of sensitive data from users aged 13 to 17, as well as the platform's age verification process and privacy settings for young users.

The regulator found that TikTok had violated multiple aspects of GDPR, including processing young users' data and implementing deceptive design decisions. In addition to the fine, TikTok is required to make its data processing compliant by the end of the year.

This is the largest penalty imposed on TikTok by regulators, showcasing the company's history of privacy and safety missteps concerning children.
