How AI & Fiber Optics Revolutionize Connectivity: Retail to Castles

The grandeur of the medieval streets of Paris served as the perfect backdrop for Huawei Connect 2024, a congregation of innovators and tech enthusiasts exploring the future of AI-driven solutions. This year’s conference was particularly significant, as it featured the inaugural Huawei Cloud Summit France, showcasing the organization’s AI-native strategy. Attendees experienced firsthand how innovation in “AI for Cloud” and “Cloud for AI” is shaping industries by delivering transformative solutions. As a Huawei Partner, I have an opportunity to bridge the gap between these transformative solutions and their real-world implications for businesses and individuals.

The conference featured speakers emphasizing the critical role of innovation in building secure, reliable cloud services tailored for diverse sectors as well as the importance of Pangu models’ capabilities, which are enabling intelligent upgrades in over 400 use cases across 30 industries. This dual approach, encompassing efficient infrastructure for AI applications and AI-powered enhancements for cloud services, was a recurring theme of the summit.

One notable initiative was the launch of Flexus cloud services, designed to empower small and medium enterprises in France with AI-driven speed, scalability, and security. Further, Huawei’s partnership with Station F, the world’s largest startup incubator, was a highlight. Together, they aim to foster sustainable innovation through startup acceleration programs, demonstrating a commitment to long-term development in Europe.

While the keynote presentations and ecosystem advancements offered high-level insights, the exhibition booths brought the technology to life with practical applications.

Exploring Innovation Through the Lens of Practicality

During the conference, I had the privilege of conducting a booth tour showcasing some of the most intriguing advancements in connectivity and AI applications.

One fascinating demonstration involved fiber optics in an unexpected setting: a medieval castle. Thick stone walls and heritage preservation regulations typically make such sites technological dead zones. Traditional cables are impractical, and Wi-Fi struggles to penetrate the dense walls. However, the showcased fiber solution was both elegant and effective. A thin, adhesive fiber cable—strong enough to hold multiple bottles of water yet nearly invisible—provided a seamless way to install high-speed internet without drilling or altering the historical structure.

This innovative approach is not confined to heritage sites. Whether for homes, offices, or any challenging infrastructure, this fiber technology delivers gigabit speeds effortlessly, improving connectivity while preserving aesthetics and structural integrity.

Another highlight was the use of fiber for sensing and security. Fiber cables installed on fences can detect precise locations of disturbances, distinguishing between harmless activities—like birds perching—and potential threats like intruders. The integration of AI further refines this process, allowing cameras and sensors to analyze real-time data and trigger appropriate responses. Such applications extend to airports, railways, and even personal property, significantly enhancing safety measures while reducing false alarms.

Smart Stores and AI: A Glimpse into the Future

Another standout feature of the booth tour was a live demonstration of a smart store. Designed to revolutionize retail experiences, this setup combines cameras, sensors, and AI to enable a seamless "enter, grab, and go" process. Customers simply register via their phone number and payment method, and the store tracks items removed or replaced on shelves using weight sensors.

Unlike traditional self-checkout systems, there are no barcodes to scan or items to manually record. The AI processes all transactions in real-time, ensuring a frictionless experience. As the customer exits, a receipt is sent directly to their phone. This technology holds immense potential for retail environments, from convenience stores to petrol stations, enhancing customer satisfaction while streamlining operations.

Looking Ahead

The advancements showcased at the summit highlight how innovation in connectivity and AI is reshaping industries. From improving security and connectivity in complex environments to revolutionizing retail experiences, these technologies prioritize user-centric solutions that deliver efficiency and reliability.

While these demonstrations underscore the transformative power of AI and fiber technology, their true value lies in the real-world benefits they provide. By focusing on practical applications, businesses and consumers alike stand to gain from faster, smarter, and more sustainable solutions.

Amazon has some stores like that in some US airports. There prices were also higher than the local airport competition. $8 for a favorite bottle of water.
