Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the field of DEI. The DEI technology market is estimated to be $313 million and growing and is likely to become an integral part of a company’s HR practices. According to PwC’s 2022 AI Business Survey, “AI leaders” are using AI to target business transformation, enhance decision-making, and solve complex business decisions around DEI.
One area with great potential for AI is worker retention. Companies can use AI to identify departments or roles with a high risk of attrition, workers who are dissatisfied or not engaged, and even people who feel isolated because they’re working remotely. Once companies identify employees who feel disconnected or marginalized, they can take action to make those workers feel respected and included.
AI is also being harnessed to create fairer opportunities for promotion and more equitable compensation. A recent paper in the Journal of AI, Robotics, and Workplace Automation highlighted how AI can be used to minimize bias in employee performance reviews. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Conversational AI (CAI) technologies allow companies to automatically monitor performance reviews for biased language and serve as a foundation for company-wide analytics.
While AI-driven systems are subject to the biases of the information they receive, increasing evidence suggests we can minimize programming bias in machine-based systems, creating a more equal playing field for all.
