How AI Can Replace Brokers and Dispatchers in Freight Transportation

In the freight industry, where millions of drivers and clients depend on accuracy and efficiency, intermediaries—like brokers and dispatchers—play a key role. But how essential is this role in today’s tech-driven world?
Recently, I faced a situation where a broker mistakenly assigned me the wrong vehicle for transport. To fix it, the broker simply doubled the cost. I’m certain he didn’t incur any losses himself—he simply passed them onto the client. How often does this happen? Drivers earn less, and clients pay more due to avoidable additional fees.
This is why I believe AI can—and should—replace intermediaries.
AI can automatically register on freight marketplaces, find loads, communicate with drivers and clients through SMS or calls, manage schedules, and most importantly—calculate fair delivery costs. This would not only reduce client costs but also increase driver earnings.
An example from my experience: I have an excellent dispatcher. Last time, he found me a load paying $5 per mile. Those in the industry know that’s an incredibly high rate these days. But my dispatcher has one weakness: he’s a young guy, and every Friday, he goes out with friends, indulging in revelry and alcohol. So, weekends become a problem for me. Sure, I earn well during the week, but sometimes, my truck sits idle on weekends because he can’t secure a load.
AI doesn’t make mistakes or depend on human vulnerabilities. It can operate 24/7, ensuring seamless work and maximum efficiency for drivers.

Financial Implications
The U.S. trucking market is valued at over $790 billion annually (Source: American Trucking Associations).
If brokers and dispatchers take 30-50% of delivery costs, imagine how much drivers lose and how much clients could save! For instance, on each billion dollars in turnover, up to $500 million goes to intermediaries. If this could be redistributed, drivers could earn more, and clients could spend less.
What This Means for the Industry
AI is already prepared to transform the industry. The only question is, who’s ready to embrace these changes and benefit from them?
