How AI Agents will replace the LMS and automate the mundane tasks of L&D
One of the great expectations for my Career Playground powered by AI is that it can replace the organization LMS and automate mundane tasks carried out by L&D Professionals like building Learning roadmaps for employees. Who needs a Learning Management System if AI can find great resources and suggest learning roadmaps?
If the priority is around Compliance training, AI fundamentals or Relationship Building, simply by writing a smart prompt Career Playground can find the best resources and build a Learning roadmap for every employee and of course all the data can be aggregated up to report back on progress for L&D. The reality up to this point, however, has been a little different. We found that using Bing APIs worked equally as well if not better than ChatGPT 4.0/4.0 mini in finding resources. With ChatGPT resources are often not specific enough and links are broken or do not work, or the content is older and not reflective of modern-day thinking.
I categorize the challenges to overcome in delivering learning roadmaps that can be built more efficiently and are of higher quality than those built by L&D Professionals into the following categories:

Step in the AI Agent to work in the background to take on the task that traditionally has been accomplished by L&D Professionals building learning roadmaps. The AI Agent surfs the net to find the best resources. For example, let’s say I’m a Senior Search Consultant with a Recruitment Agency and one of my Skill Priorities for the next Qtr. is “Relationship Building”.
The AI Agent will:
***Applicability***
Find on-line courses, talks, articles that are directly applicable to “Relationship Building” across top content providers who publish relationship building resources such as LinkedIn Learning, Coursera and Udemy. The AI Agent will also be able to deduce that an individual requires foundational, intermediate or an expert level roadmap based on their history.
***Association***
The AI Agent will find complimentary resources such as “Building Trust”, “Building Rapport”, “Being Authentic” that are directly associated with “Building Relationships”. Here the AI Agent can deduce the most valuable associated resources.
***Recognition***
The AI Agent will find the “Highest Rated” resources such as on-line courses based on learner reviews and learner ratings for resources again across all content providers such that companies are not restricted.

***Modern***
The AI Agent will find only resources that are reflective of modern-day thinking and have been published within a timeframe that makes sense. For example, with “Relationship Building” modern principles and practices have evolved over the last decade from Solution Selling to Sales Challenger and laterally “Selling with Authenticity”.? The AI Agent will reason that the best resources are most likely to be based on modern day principles but also will not ignore important principles and practices that for good reasons lasted the test of time.
***Digestible***
Find on-line courses that are structured into “bite-sized” lessons/modules that are easily digestible as part of a step-by-step roadmap that enables self-paced learning.
***Workable***
Find the title of the resource, the author and description for each resource. Find a “working link” to access and importantly ensure the link works and is not broken.
***Economical***
Because economic learning is such an important requirement for both companies and individuals the AI Agent can deduce which resources are highly rated free resources vs. paid resources. The Agent can add a distinguishing label that “Recommends” highly rated free resources alongside highly rated premium resources.
***Goal Orientated***
The AI Agent suggests a learning goal and generates a week-by-week learning roadmap for employees to follow to realize the suggested goal.
***Proficiency and Execution***
The Agent ensures the learning roadmap includes the ***Workable*** information and includes both “Proficiency” building resources that meet the level of proficiency that an individual has reached (see applicability above) along with “suggested” on-the-job experiences that ensures the individual can effectively implement the appropriately “Levelled” practices they have learnt.
***Notification***
The AI Agent helps individuals track progress week by week towards a stated goal, notifying the individual of what’s on today’s agenda and what’s on the horizon. The AI Agent will help keep track by adding time onto the individual’s calendar for learning every day with the specific learning tasks to be completed on that day and for that week aligned with the learning roadmap.
Of course, the AI Agent can track and aggregate data and deliver reports notifying L&D so they can see “real-time” how the business is tracking towards achieving organization wide L&D goals!
A new era of AI Models will automate the work of L&D
Step into a new era of reasoning models from OpenAI 01 and soon 03 that will enable AI Agents. These models are more powerful than before because they can “reason”. This means they can recommend complimentary courses associated with “Relationship Building.” Just like playing a game of checkers they can “reason” the best next move for a player to make and because of this they can suggest next career moves along a career pathway towards a dream career job with a high degree of precision and even find open positions aligned with these moves either inside or outside of a company.
Because of AI Agents and a new era of reasoning models from OpenAI and other LLM builders we will see the mundane tasks historically carried out by L&D Professionals now taken on by AI Agents so that L&D Professionals can focus on strategic and forward-facing work.
