The Agile software development framework has had a tremendous impact on the IT industry since it emerged in the early 2000s. Born out of frustration with traditional waterfall development methods, Agile emphasizes iterative delivery, close collaboration, and continuous improvement. Over the past two decades, these Agile values and principles have reshaped how software teams operate and deliver value to customers.
One of the most significant shifts enabled by Agile is faster time-to-market. Instead of waiting months or years for a finished software product, Agile teams deliver working software in small increments throughout the development cycle. This allows features to get into users' hands faster for feedback. Frequent deliverables and collaboration also reduce risk and improve alignment with business objectives.
Agile has also empowered IT teams to respond better to changing requirements. The iterative approach makes it easier to re-prioritize work based on evolving needs. Agile teams can quickly iterate and improve their products to adapt to new demands. This level of flexibility and responsiveness is difficult in traditional waterfall development.
Additionally, Agile improves software quality by focusing on early and continuous testing. With developers and testers working closely together and testing throughout the lifecycle, defects can be identified and fixed promptly. This prevents quality issues from piling up towards the end, reducing cost and risk.

Finally, Agile enables higher team productivity and morale. With self-organizing teams, flatter hierarchies, and opportunities to learn through iterations, Agile unshackles developers from bureaucratic processes. The collaborative environment also leads to more engaged teams and better knowledge sharing.
While Agile has its roots in software development, the principles have since been applied across IT and other business functions. Agile values and practices around adaptation, transparency, and delivering value now permeate how modern IT organizations operate. Agile truly has had a transformational effect on the technology landscape over the past 20 years.
