Why do women find it so hard to advocate for themselves in the workplace? Let’s be honest here: for the gender considered to be better when it comes to communicating, advocating for ourselves always seems to be a challenge, especially in professional circles. Is it a combination of cultural, societal, and organizational factors??
Historically, gender norms have dictated that women should prioritize modesty, humility, and communal goals over personal advancement. This societal conditioning can lead to hesitancy in promoting their own achievements and asserting their needs.
Moreover, workplace cultures and structures have traditionally been male dominated, making it difficult for women to navigate and advocate effectively. Gender biases and stereotypes can also play a significant role, with assertive women sometimes being labeled negatively, further discouraging self-advocacy.
After highlighting the various reasons or causes for this, what can be done to help women, me included, to advocate better for ourselves so we get the recognition and compensation we deserve? Especially as we enter the quarter-three appraisal season. As a marketing communications professional, one of such ways that I have identified is using one of the roles that are under my purview, Internal Communications.?
