How to Advocate for yourself in the workplace with Internal Communications

Why do women find it so hard to advocate for themselves in the workplace? Let’s be honest here: for the gender considered to be better when it comes to communicating, advocating for ourselves always seems to be a challenge, especially in professional circles. Is it a combination of cultural, societal, and organizational factors??

Historically, gender norms have dictated that women should prioritize modesty, humility, and communal goals over personal advancement. This societal conditioning can lead to hesitancy in promoting their own achievements and asserting their needs.

Moreover, workplace cultures and structures have traditionally been male dominated, making it difficult for women to navigate and advocate effectively. Gender biases and stereotypes can also play a significant role, with assertive women sometimes being labeled negatively, further discouraging self-advocacy.

After highlighting the various reasons or causes for this, what can be done to help women, me included, to advocate better for ourselves so we get the recognition and compensation we deserve? Especially as we enter the quarter-three appraisal season. As a marketing communications professional, one of such ways that I have identified is using one of the roles that are under my purview, Internal Communications.?

Internal communications within an organization refer to the process of conveying information, messages, and insights to employees at all levels. It involves strategically sharing knowledge, updates, goals, and values essential for maintaining a cohesive and informed workforce.?

However, advocating for yourself in the workplace through internal communications is crucial for career growth and job satisfaction. Here are effective ways to do so:

  • Express Your Goals and Ambitions Clearly: During performance reviews, team meetings, or one-on-one discussions, clearly communicate your career goals, aspirations, and areas you want to develop. Articulate how achieving these aligns with your role and benefits the organization.
  • Demonstrate Your Achievements and Value: Regularly update your supervisor or team on your accomplishments, projects, and tasks completed successfully. Use data, metrics, or concrete examples to showcase the impact of your work on the team and the company.
  • Seek Constructive Feedback and Act on It: Request feedback from your colleagues, supervisors, or peers on your performance. Use this feedback to improve your skills and demonstrate your commitment to growth and excellence.
  • Participate Actively in Team Discussions: Engage in team meetings and discussions, offering your insights, ideas, and solutions. This showcases your knowledge, involvement, and dedication to the team's success.
  • Initiate Professional Development Conversations: Discuss your professional growth opportunities with your supervisor. Inquire about training programs, workshops, or mentorship that could enhance your skills and contribute to your career advancement within the organization.
  • Volunteer for Special Projects or Initiatives: Offer to take the lead or participate in projects that align with your interests and expertise. This demonstrates your initiative and willingness to contribute beyond your regular duties.
  • Build Strong Relationships and Networks: Develop positive relationships with colleagues and supervisors within your team and across departments. Networking can provide valuable opportunities for growth and a supportive environment for advocating for your ideas and contributions.
  • Communicate Your Challenges and Needs Effectively: If you're facing challenges, whether it's workload or specific tasks, communicate them tactfully and propose solutions. This demonstrates problem-solving skills and an understanding of your own professional needs.
  • Document Your Success Stories: Maintain a record of your achievements, praise or recognition received, and positive feedback. Use this documentation during performance reviews or when advocating for a promotion or salary increase.
  • Confidently Discuss Your Value During Reviews: During performance evaluations, confidently discuss your contributions, growth, and how you've exceeded expectations. Provide evidence to support your case for advancement or increased responsibilities.
