The people may have spoken.?
After years of listening to election deniers on the right telling us their elections were stolen, we now have election deniers on the left convinced there was voting machine chicanery, Elon Musk meddling, and an admittedly peculiar phenomenon called Bullet Ballots (BBs), which have one vote in one race and no other votes in the election, also known as top voting.
Lured by the accuracy of the algorithms on Twitter/X, which fed me heaping helpings of my own cognitive bias, the outcome of the presidential race was not a pleasant surprise. In the days leading up to the election, I saw many testimonials from men who were ready to support the democratic candidate for president, seemingly immune to the idea that she was both black and a woman.
This new trend led me to believe we were evolving.
When I take many steps back from all the commotion, I recognize my status as an Outlier. More proof of this fact of my life can be found in the list below.
Here’s a rundown of the top 10 American pastimes or uniquely cultural habits based on popularity, participation, and cultural significance:
1. Watching Sports (especially football)
American football, baseball, basketball, and soccer are popular spectator sports, but football holds a unique place due to events like the Super Bowl.?
Outlier 1) You can put everything I know or care to know about professional sports into a thimble and have room left over for a shot of Tequila.?
2. Barbecuing and Grilling
Barbecues are a celebrated tradition, especially on holidays like the Fourth of July.?
Outlier 2) Rich loves to grill and have friends over for meals but I am challenged to read the instructions to turn on the grill.
3. Consumer Culture
Malls, online shopping, Black Friday, and holiday shopping.
Outlier 3) I'll give myself a 1/2 point here, as my addiction to Apple products is well know.?
4.Tailgate Parties
Tailgating before sports games.??
Outlier 4) I was paid $5000 to attend my first tailgate party, which was also my last.??
5. Car Culture
Americans love cars and frequently embark on road trips.?
Outlier 5) We fly more than we drive.?
6. Movies
Movie-going culture, particularly for blockbusters.
Outlier 6) Blockbuster movies-especially ones that involve superheroes, action adventures, car chases, and explosions do not hold my attention.?
7. Recreational Sports
Activities like fishing, hunting, golfing, and now pickleball have long traditions in American recreation.?
Outlier 7) I caught a fish once when I was 10, trying to impress a boy. It didn’t end well for the fish, or the boy, for that matter.
8. Celebrating Thanksgiving and Other Holiday Traditions
Thanksgiving is an iconic American holiday focused on family gatherings, food, and reflection. Other holidays like Halloween and the Fourth of July also hold unique places in American culture.?
Guilty as charged here!?
9. Watching and Playing Video Games
With the rise of e-sports and gaming consoles, video gaming has become an increasingly popular pastime, especially among younger generations.?
Outlier 9) Nope, as many times as my grandsons have tried to spark enthusiasm for playing Minecraft with them, I fail.?
10. Home Improvement and DIY Projects?
Many Americans spend time working on their homes.
Outlier 9) We are no longer homeowners; we are digital nomads.?
When you participate 1.5 out of ten of the top American pastimes I think the label "Outlier" is apt.?
Americans love the 'good bad guy,' a character who grabs the steering wheel with a confident swagger, right foot hard on the gas and left hand on a rack of ribs.?
This archetype, often celebrated in adrenaline-fueled pastimes like football, tailgates, barbecues, and blockbuster binges, seems to have set the stage for what some might call a 'reality show election.'?
The appeal of this character, combined with a social media algorithm that spoon-feeds everyone’s bias back at them, has seemingly led to the current presidency, a result that some may argue is more about adrenalized entertainment than governance - one Outlier's opinion.?
