How to actually stop procrastinating

Welcome back, readers! ?? In today's issue, we're diving into a topic that goes beyond the technicalities of software and engineering—procrastination. You might wonder how this subject fits into the format of our newsletter. Well, I aim to share not only software-specific insights but also valuable life lessons and thoughts that cross my mind. I hope you find them beneficial, whether in your professional or personal life.

The Procrastination Dilemma

I recently stumbled upon a YouTube video titled "How to Actually Stop Procrastinating" by a NASA engineer. The title alone caught my attention, and I felt compelled to share the core message with you. In the video, the creator explains how to understand why you procrastinate and how to combat it effectively.

Why Do We Procrastinate?

Procrastination often strikes either at the start of a new task/project or during continuous work. Let's focus on the beginning phase, where most of us struggle. According to the video, three main reasons drive one to procrastinate at the start (though there might be more):

  1. Fear ??
  2. Interest Values ??
  3. Overwhelm ????

Combatting Procrastination

Fear

Fear of failure or not meeting someone else's standards can often paralyze us. If this is your driver, try to create a "Version 0" of your task or project. This initial, less polished version can help you break the ice and move forward.

Interest Values

Sometimes, the task doesn't align with your personal or professional values, leading to a lack of motivation. If this is the case, ask yourself if the task is worth pursuing. If it is, try to make it enjoyable—maybe listen to your favorite music, go for a walk, or set a small reward for yourself.

Overwhelm

Feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of a project can halt progress. To combat this, break down the project into manageable steps. Identify the very first step you need to take. This can help you create a "Version 0" and make the task less daunting.

External Accountability

To further accelerate your progress, find an "external" accountability partner—someone who checks in on you and asks about your progress. This added layer of responsibility can be a strong motivator.

A Quick Summary

This was a brief overview of the top three reasons why we procrastinate and how to overcome them. For a more detailed explanation, check out the full video here.

I put off "liking" this post for five days. I just didn't get around to it until now....

Procrastination affects up to 20% of adults, leading to significant delays and stress. Often, it’s driven by fear of failure and a tendency to avoid uncomfortable tasks. Additionally, being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work can lead to paralysis. The key is breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and aligning them with personal interests to boost motivation. At Habit10X, we help people tackle procrastination with tailored strategies and support.

Great read! Overcoming procrastination is one of the keys to success. As a financial advisor and mentor, I like the idea of having an "external accountability partner" who can help hold you responsible for taking actionable steps toward personal and financial goals.
