How to Activate Your "Hunger" to Discover Your Path

"The Path" by Tony Robbins

Author, Motivational Speaker, and High-Performance Coach Tony Robbins, one of the biggest names in the personal development field, developed a checklist of 7 steps called "The Path", that you can review regularly to reflect on your goals this past year and create new objectives and the path to follow for the new year.

Here is "The Path" disclosed for you:

Step One: Define What Do You Want?

Activate your "hunger" (aka your desire).

Tony Robbins says "The most important ingredient when it comes to success in life is hunger. The desire to do more, be more, give more, share more, create more." He says that life is the dance between what you desire most and fear most.

If you can figure out what it is that you desire the most in life, that's when you can start really BEING a driver on "The Path".

So, think about it now. What is it that you desire the most? Do you want to have a social impact and help people? Do you want to be an incredible parent and build a family? Do you want to own a multi-million-dollar business? Do you want all of the above?

WHAT do you want? And more importantly, WHY do you want that?

Identifying both will help you create the foundation to work for it, especially in those moments when the road gets tough.

Step Two: Find and Face the Truth

Get clear about WHERE you are right now. And about where you want to be.

Now, identify the gap between the both. Why haven't you been able to close this gap before? Be honest with yourself. Is it an old story, an old belief you tell yourself? Are you missing a skill? Is it maybe a habit you need to break? Or is it fear? Maybe it's even a combination of all these.

Sometimes, we even have "upper limit" beliefs about what are the limits of what we deserve and what we think we can accomplish. Often, we also believe that if we ask for more, we are being selfish, unreasonable, or even unrealistic. Notice this and be candid with yourself. How are you getting in your own way?

Step Three: Resolve and Create a M.A.P

This is what Tony calls a "Massive Action Plan (M.A.P)".

What actions do you need to take today to begin to close the gap??Identify them and put them down on paper, so you can see them often.

Here, I will add that you should think about the smallest daily actions you need to take, as well as the weekly and monthly actions that can bring you closer to your goal.

Step Four: You Have To Do What’s Hard

Here's where you have to kill your insecurities and your fears and drop the excuses.

This is where most people get stuck and don't go ahead with The Path. Here's where resistance comes to keep you in the same known, "safe" place.

Here's where you have to use the hunger for what you want to help you fight that resistance.

Step Five: Develop a Daily Practice

This means creating a daily practice that helps you reset and gives you the energy you need to keep coming back each day.

You must condition the change. Make it a habit. And remind yourself often of the "why" behind the behavior.

Some examples of this include:

  • I will walk every morning for 30 minutes because it gives me energy and inner peace.
  • I will start my day with meditation and affirmations because it grounds me and helps me regulate my nervous system for the day.
  • I will avoid devices and blue light 2 hours before going to bed to have a better night of sleep.
  • I will journal every morning and evening and write down the things I'm grateful for and the goals I have as a way to reconnect with my why.

You need to renew your inner world daily, so you can then crush your goals?in the external world too.

Make sure to schedule these daily practices in your calendar!

Step Six: Raise Your Standards and Measure More Often

It’s human nature that our motivation decreases and that we let things remain the same because our brains seek the comfort of stability (and run away from the threat of something not known- aka new).

As such, some of the things you didn't want to miss doing because you knew they were important to get to where you desire to get, start becoming things you "should" do (but that you don't "feel like it"). The 'musts' start becoming 'shoulds'.

That's why the importance of continually raising your standards and measuring where you are now. Continually ask: "What is working?". "What is not working?". And adjust accordingly.

Here, you can use "thinking open-ended questions" that challenge the status quo and motivate you to take action by prompting you to think about the heart of the issue. To ask: "Why are you stryggling to take that action, make that request, ask that question?"

This practice helps because: A) it takes your mind off feeling the discomfort associated with change and B) it guides your mind into problem-solving mode.

This happens because our brains are wired to get out of the emotional and automatic state they are in initially when challenged to ‘think’.

For this reason, self-awareness practices, coaching, and surrounding yourself with the kind of people who will hold you accountable and whom you want to emulate are so important to create and change habits. Get in rooms of people who continually inspire you and are in the next stage of where you want to go.

Accountability creates growth. Your goals are a moving target. It requires being relentless and constantly adjusting to try new things.

Continual growth and progress are what fulfills most people. Knowing that you are never done. So, don’t make the mistake of trying to go at it on your own. Get a mentor or a coach who has walked the path before.

Step Seven: Life Is a Gift- Celebrate, Appreciate, and Give Back

This step is about making sure you don't forget what life is all about.

"Life is a gift. And it’s meant to be shared."?- Tony Robbins.

Continually celebrate your accomplishments and your growth. Life should always be celebrated and make this celebration push you to do something else for others, to give back. You already have a new accomplishment or skill. Now go and teach it, and help someone else get there too. That way we can contribute to something larger than ourselves, which is one of the six human basic needs we have.

These seven steps are not linear, you don't complete one and get done towards the next. They are cyclical. You have to come back to them periodically and review where you are on a consistent basis.
