How accurate is EZMod3D in inductance extraction ?

It is often difficult to estimate the inductance of arbitrary shaped conductors. On of the solutions to address this issue is using a 3D Field Solver such as EASII-IC EZMod3D. When using a tool, it is important to be confident in the results it generates. The best way for checking an inductance extractor is to compare the results to actual measurements.

In this case, a square spiral inductor was implemented as a PCB. This is not at properly speaking an arbitrary shape since there are formulas to calculate such inductors value.

With the parameters of the test inductor, Wheeler formula predicts 2.14 micro-henrys.

As can be seen in the headline picture, measured value is 2.10 micro-henrys.

Now, what about EZMod3D extracted value ?

EZMod3D generates the following netlist:

LR00 Pin1__Pin2 Pin2 2.18939580097580881e-06

.ENDS EQUIVR0_COARSE

EZMod3D extracts an inductance value of 2.19 micro-henry and a series resistance value of 0.158 ohms.

Not so bad !
