How to get accepted into a prestigious school seems to be the number one goal for many parents.
We recently went on a fascinating tour of US Naval Academy.?I was interested in the history of the academy and Annapolis, seeing the beautiful campus and learning about the function of this institution in the US. I got that and so much more!?
The tour guide, a retired naval officer and a former director of the admissions team, gave us information about life as a plebe and a midshipman, about the mission to develop and graduate leaders, and how academics, discipline, and Division I sports contribute to students' development.
There were a few high school students on the tour with their families and the guide directed many of his comments to them. At least 3 times he mentioned the admissions essay and how critical it was that it was error-free, as a typo would disqualify them immediately.
He also stressed the importance of?THEIR?decision to attend the academy. Later he mentioned that if they were feeling pressure from their parents or an obligation to attend, and if they were unsure, all they had to do was to submit their essay with a typo. Lol
I work with so many parents who are navigating the transition from managing their children, to allowing them to manage themselves. This should be a natural transition in adolescence so that teens can practice making decisions and problem-solving while they are still under their parents' roof. The biggest and hardest challenge for parents is letting go gradually.
If you are not sure about how much leeway to give your children, or experiencing defiance or anger that you are not letting them manage themselves, let's hop on a call. Just schedule?HERE.?
