In 2024, more executives, founders, and subject matter experts are creating video content and taking to the stage for presentation opportunities to build their authority and win over their market. Those perceived as an “Authority” build trust, connection, and relationships with their audience. Also, those perceived as an “Authority” accelerate their growth strategy and build a competitive advantage that leads to greater access to resources and business opportunities. Not to mention, becoming an “Authority” in your market drives down customer acquisition costs (CAC) and elevates your return on advertising spend (ROAS) exponentially.
To develop your Authority, focus on these four areas:
Let's delve into the first of the four characteristics: "Expertise," and its five subcategories (Subject Knowledge, Industry Knowledge, Market Knowledge, Business Knowledge, and Network).? But before we begin, the key to being perceived as an “Authority” is how you curate and communicate information in a precise and concise manner. You could technically be a 10 out of 10 subject matter expert, but can only communicate at a 4. Where on that scale do you think you’ll be perceived by your audience? The most educated subject matter experts get very little engagement because they fail to curate and communicate information in a precise and concise manner. At the end, you will find a link to an assessment that will help discover how you score based on the high-performance indicators in the areas of Expertise, Emotional Intelligence, Communication, and Leadership. Gain insight on how you can increase "Founder Fit" for fundability or elevate your Executive Authority for high-performing C-suite leadership and senior management.
Subject Knowledge
An expert possesses a comprehensive understanding of their subject (product, service, or topic). They can effectively communicate its value and benefits from a customer, consumer, or audience perspective. Their intimate knowledge of pain points and experiences allows them to share stories of how customers overcame challenges using their product. Experts understand that an empathetic product impact message builds trust, addresses customer needs, and exceeds expectations. Experts also have a high regard for their competitors' products or services and can speak confidently about competing and complimenting products. This allows the "expert" to be considered as a "trusted advisor" by providing guidance on how to optimize customer experience for their best outcome, even if it means recommending a competitor's product or service.
Industry (Domain/Environment) Knowledge
Secondly, an expert has insightful industry knowledge, enabling them to monitor and interpret trends, innovations, opportunities, challenges, and regulatory compliance. This knowledge facilitates strategic planning and positioning in the market. Experts recognize various industry segments and niches, tailoring product development to address specific needs and demands while keeping their business on the cutting edge.
Market Knowledge
Market knowledge provides empathetic insight into customer needs, preferences, behaviors, and market conditions, influencing the buying and selling of goods and services. This understanding informs targeted marketing strategies, pricing models, and customer acquisition plans. Experts comprehend the competitive landscape, ensuring product-market fit and effective go-to-market strategies.

Business Knowledge
General business knowledge allows founders and senior executives to streamline processes, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure smooth day-to-day functioning. Understanding operations, such as supply chain management, inventory control, and workflow optimization, minimizes costs and maximizes productivity. A well-defined strategy, coupled with an understanding of the operational landscape, differentiates companies and propels them towards scalability and sustainability.
Network
If you’re a respected “expert” in your industry, you’re naturally going to have a well-established network. A well-established network is a rich resource of relationships that affords access to money, support, guidance, shared knowledge, other networks, and much more. Preexisting relationships create a network of trust for founders and executives, facilitating product testing, feedback, and initial sales. Supplier and partner connections introduce reliable collaborators and strategic partners, streamlining procurement and growth processes. A robust network also grants access to capital and potential investors. It provides up-to-date market intelligence, helping to stay informed about industry trends, competitive landscapes, data, and emerging opportunities. Beyond resources, a network offers emotional support and a sense of community. Building a substantial industry network helps not only to survive but thrive in your industry. It enhances your chances of success by providing a valuable support system and a direct pathway to key stakeholders and opportunities not otherwise accessible to an “outsider.”
*A well-established network is the most important characteristic of an expert. First, it validates the character, credibility, and competency of the expert. Second, the “expert” may not be the best or brightest in the areas of product, industry, market, and business, but they have access and influence to a pool of experts that could make up an expert team.
Conclusion
Use these 5 perspectives on “expertise” to curate your messaging to build your “Authority.” In my next article, I will share the second element of “Authority,” emotional intelligence. In order to stay competitive in the market, top companies support learning and development for leadership and high-performing employees.
