How will 2023 food trends impact the food service business?

A new year brings with it new trends. Often those trends include colors, fashion styles, exercise regimens, and other lifestyle changes. In the culinary world, there are food trends that the Specialty Food Association (SFA) Trendspotter Panel predicts. The panel is comprised of culinary experts who test and research market data and products to make determinations about the specialty food industry. This year's panel has come up with nine specialty food trends that we can expect to see in 2023:
What does this mean for those in the food service industry?
It likely means an uptick in the use of sustainable, on-the-go food packaging. Consumers want the convenience of easy, at-home meals and many are opting out of full-service restaurant dining because of inflation. According to Placer.ai, quick-service visits continue to grow, which suggests customers are choosing lower-priced options.
Stan Sagner, Founder of We Work for Food, LLC, predicts that we will see “a heightened emphasis on packaging design to communicate sustainability and introduce creative ways to consume." In other words, food service businesses will need to "think outside the box" and offer more eco-friendly packaging options without compromising quality. And consumers will be brainstorming ways to eat healthier and quicker meals, while still being kind to the planet.
