How 1 Painter Cost Me $15,000 in 24 Hours!

I was young in the painting business – very young – when I happened to land a great commercial repaint job blacking out the ceiling with dryfall for a large restaurant.
We needed the money.
While I was excited, I also knew we were stretched thin – and my best crew leader was on another job. To land the project, we had to get started quickly.
So, I decided to give one of our crew leaders a chance to prove himself. We reviewed the detailed scope of work, he assured me he could do the project, and then things started to go sideways.
First, we were getting way behind budget and schedule. Then, I discover the crew leader is showing up late after long nights partying…? but I was in too deep to quit now! (Have you ever been there yourself?)
Finally, after the job was painted with VERY LITTLE margin left in it for profit, we found out the crew leader had painted over each and every sprinkler head in the place! So, we had to hire a Fire Prevention Company to remove the heads, drain the system, replace the heads, and test the system… and it was very expensive.
All said, my crew leader cost me $15K in less than 24 hours of bad decision-making.
In the end, I had to fire him. But, here’s the truth: I never should have hired him in the first place!
Have you suffered through this before? Are you LIVING THIS right now because you don’t have high-quality, skilled painters you can trust?
I know, I made the same mistake too! Until, after long last, I discovered I need to have a definitive recruitment, hiring & assessment strategy to attract GREAT painters and REPEL or ELIMINATE unskilled, unethical painters.
You see, a lot of owners think they have “operations” problems – and maybe they do. However, more often, it’s simply a recruitment and hiring problem.
When you staff your painting business in a hurry out of desperation, you make bad hires. You settle for painters who are slow, sloppy and lack the attention to detail needed to keep you from babysitting 24-7.
Have you struggled for years to recruit and hire painters so you can grow?
Is your day-to-day life miserable because you have staffed your company with the “labor leftovers” instead of an all-star crew?
While this may be a pain-in-the-keister for you as an owner, it’s also costing you a fortune. One skilled painter can earn you $1,000 to $1,400 in gross profits per week – or more.
Are you STILL just posting a $50 ad on Craigslist and Indeed hoping for the best? If it hasn’t worked before, why do you think it will work this season?
Why don’t you finally free yourself of this problem? Learn to RECRUIT and HIRE in a systematic fashion, just like the national franchises do!
You can have all the work lined up in the world, but if your painters blow the budget and drive you crazy every day, what’s the point of painting… when you can lose money sitting at home!
Next week, I’m hosting a Hiring & Recruitment Bootcamp right before we head into the spring repaint rush! LINK: https://bit.ly/4inYsf1
If you hire one painter who profitably works for you for 30-days, you will have gotten a 3X return on your investment… and the rest will be gravy after month one.
