Houston....We're Gonna Make It

This is a shout out to everyone who has expressed concerns for me and my crew who live in the Greater Houston area. Hurricane Harvey has definitely created havoc here. Rainfall of over 42 inches in 72 hours has caused widespread and historic flooding. I mean we flood from time to time, but nothing like this. Areas that have NEVER flooded are now under water.

In my own community, we are surrounded by a levee system that is designed to protect us from the Brazos River flood zones. Last year when the Brazos crested at an all-time record of 54.7 feet, we saw water coming close to, but never in our area. Right now, the Brazos is projected to crest at 57.5 ft, almost 3 feet higher than last year. There are mandatory evacuations being called, but no one can go anywhere because roads are already impassable. We sit and wait.

Today actually looks a bit brighter than before. The storm system is moving slowly easterly. While that is not good news for our friends in Beaumont and Louisiana, it gives our area some relief.

The big news is that spirits are high. Total strangers are stepping up to help with moving people, giving helping hands, and encouraging those less fortunate. We have seen people from all walks of life banding together to help. It’s actual a beautiful thing that kindles a new hope for the human condition. When an event like this laps up to your door (or into your house), it becomes easy to forget petty differences.
